Mechwarrior 4 is finally free AND released.

Only get mercs. Fun, but the campaign is a lot weaker (and you get heavy and assault mechs too soon for my tases) than Vengeance and Black Knights.

Can't be arsed with MekTek... they make something which should be simple, complicated slow and annoying.
I'd rather just grab it from a pirate site... but I won't (if only because I've got too much to play these days).

Okay, MTX is pure laggy garbage.
That being said:
Start up MTX
Queue up the game
Exit MTX
Go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\mektek.net\MTX\temp\games\torrents directory (your path may vary)
Grab the .torrent
Use a good client like Vuze or uTorrent
Save the .mtx file to C:\Program Files (x86)\mektek.net\MTX\temp\games
Fiddle with MTX after it finishes

Yeah. MTX looks like a reskinned uTorrent, just crappier (the program runs like garbage).
So just jack the torrent, then download. Not the fastest torrent (since the vast majority of people didn't forward any ports), but so be it.
Yeah, MTX is pure garbage.
Doesn't seem to want to let me install, even from the file. And considering that MTX bumps up to 80% of my processor, I am staying the hell away from this for a while.

Assault Tech 1 is a "remake" of Mechwarrior 2.
But it has no campaign mode.
And it uses a combination of battletech rules that they prefer.
So in all honesty, it is just a generic mech-oriented Battletech game that happens to have MW2-era graphics :p

MTX is by far the worst game client I've ever seen. Ever.

Yeah, it's their own mech game built with its own engine and such. It's a while since I tried it but it seems very promising.
