I purchased this system from the idea of a friend. He told me that its the best portable system out there for roleplaying games.

I tried Etrian Odyssey 1 and it was just brutally unforgiving and awful game. Then Jagged Alliance, another bad game which shouldnt have been ported to a handheld. Spectrobes is brutally unforgiving and the button broke for L button. Now I am doing fossil fighters which is the worst one out there. The fossil cleaning is possible for all of the body parts except the legs. You CANT clean them because the game grades harshly on that specific deal.

I never had this issue with game boy advance. Even if the games were hard, they never sucked like those above games. The Etrian Odyssey games claimed that they were creating an oldschool experience yet how many old school games were 60 hours of the same thing, no bosses whatsoever.

I still think Game boy Advance has better rpgs for a system than the ds.
There are bosses in Etrian Odyssey on every zone (called stratum for some reason). If you have spent 60 hours in the first zone you are doing something wrong. At least concerning the first one, I haven't played the other two.

The DS has a massive library and install base, so you will find fans for every game, even if it is just kind of average.

I haven't really played many RPGs on the DS, but if you like sidescrolling action-RPGs I can recommend Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia; I haven't played Portrait of Ruin, so no comment on that one. The difficulty is slightly above easy. The only thing I dislike are the gimmicky mechanics like the souls or glyphs, but nothing that would ruin the fun for me.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Team Blue was actually a surprisingly good game. It's essentially baby's first roguelike, but for what it is it's competent at it. Even the story is actually decent, for a game with talking Pokemon of course.

Etrian Odyssey isn't difficult though.

Most of the classes are pretty broken, so just about any reasonably balanced party setup is viable (outside of postgame, which requires more specific builds/strategies).

Just, in the beginning you don't really have the spare points to invest in the skills you need, and the way poison works if you get hit by it near the beginning of the game and don't cure it immediately or end the battle quickly you'll pretty much die from it.

So you probably need to stick near the entrance, target item harvest points (maybe create some mule characters with points invested in harvesting skills for harvesting runs), and just try to grind up to level 5 or 6 and are properly geared up so you can survive past the first floor. After that exploration should go smoothly as long as you don't bite off more than you should chew.

also note that the later games introduce new features and try to streamline some things a bit, which means it might be better to start with 3 or the 3DS games than at the beginning.
I like the Etrian Odyssey games but they can be tough. As someone who is actually old(school), I'll state these RPGs are probably easier and much more user friendly than the games of my youth. Here are some unsolicited DS RPGs I've enjoyed:

-Dragon Quest games (all of them on DS)
-The World Ends With You
-Devil Survivor
-Chrono Trigger
-Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (though it has the same basic structure as Etrian Odyssey)
-Disgaea (one of the most grind-tastic SRPG I've ever played)
I usually like the rpg if it plays well and has a good story. I also dont like it if its just a dungeon crawl that is enormously long.

I played Pool of Radiance on my psp and I get all my characters to level 8 and then quit the game as there is really no reason to play further. I did the same way with Etrian Odyssey. I get to floor 7, find out the game is still 60 hours to go, quit the game and find something that is completable.

The real flaw is that I cant see grinding the game for more than 15 hours unless I cant finish the game right after that.

Baldurs Gate 1 covered the bases pretty well. You start out and get to level 5 with grinding, in area next to high hedge. After you get all the equipment you do the mines and the rest of the game.

That is how those games SHOULD be like.

Eye of the Beholder for GBA was great. I actually just beat that on 2nd try. You grind for 3 hours and get the higher levels and then attempt to take on the rest of the game which you can complete in a weekend.

Roleplaying games that are exceedingly long dont work for me. Morrowind is a perfect example. If you look at how many people actually completed the main story of the game Morrowind, you will find that less than 1/8 of the players have ever beaten the game.

I am interested in playing a game, I'm not interested in a job. I already have one.
I like Etrian Odyssey 2 a lot more than EO1. Even though they just added strafing, it's so much more user friendly. So much that I got bored of 1 but love 2.

Dragon Quests are also golden.

Some more obscure RPGs you may consider are

Radiant Historia (traditional)
SMT Devil Survivor 1 & 2 (tactical)
Knights in the Nightmare (bullet hell tactical wtf)

Personally I found GBA RPG s to be overrated myself, so I prefer the DS
The DS has a huge number of good JRPGs to try!
It looks like you've tried some of the worst rpgs available for the system (excluding Etrian Odyssey, which I still think is good), so it's a little unfair to make your judgement yet.
You can quite easily look up some 'best rpg on ds' lists on google and find many, many games to try.

From your comments, it seems like you really want a short rpg game... Well to be honest, you're probably not going to find all that many. Most are at least 30+ hours, and in many case 60+. Some do require a bit of grinding, some less so. But that's all kind of part and parcel with JRPGs. I'm surprised that you would consider yourself a fan, when the majority of rpgs are like this.
I'm guessing you're more a fan of Western RPGs, which are very different in style to JRPGs.

I'm like you in the regard that I also like to have a good story, along with the dungeon crawling/battles.
In that regard, as good as the Etrian Odyssey games are, the story is not really a big feature of it. It's much more focussed on dungeon crawling and grinding. The later games are better, but you still may not like them.
Though I have to agree with HiPhish, if you played 60 hours without coming to a boss, or experiencing anything different, you're not playing it right.

Other people have already mentioned quite a few good choices.
I think almost anything from Atlus is good. They made the Persona games, which is not only my favourite JRPG series, but my favourite series all together!
For the DS, they mad the two Devil Survivor games (which also have updated/remade games on the 3DS, if you were wondering). Those are both pretty good for both story and gameplay.

They also made Strange Journey and Radiant Historia, both of which are good. Personally I like Radiant Historia more.

The Dragon Quest games are also very good! DQ IV, V, VI and IX are on there, all great. DQ V is my personal favourite. The DQ games are a little more in the style of classic Final Fantasy, if you're a fan of those. DQIX may be the only one to be wary of as it a little less focussed on story than the others imo.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, there is of course, FFIII and FFIV which are good. IV is the better of the two! There's also a few 'side Final Fantasy' titles, like Tactics A2, The 4 Heroes of Light, and Chronicles. I personally haven't played them all, but if you're a fan of the FF series, they're probably worth looking into!

Chrono Trigger is considered by many to be one of the best RPGs of all time and you can't help but check this one out!

The World Ends With You is a fun title from Square Enix which is worth checking out as well.

If you're a fan of the Kingdom Hearts games, you could check out 365/2 Days, which is my personal favourite portable KH game.

I haven't played Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, but it looks to be quite good. Same with Phantasy Star 0.

I've just listed games which I think have good stories. I'm sure I've missed some, but hopefully you can check some of those out. :)

There are of course the Mario & Luigi games, the Pokémon series, etc. but none are really known for stellar stories, if that's what you're looking for.

You should definitely also consider trying some non-rpg titles, like 999, the Ace Attorney games, Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk and Professor Layton. Those are really good games with great stories, just without the battles or dungeon crawling.
Anyway, I hope you find some titles that you'll enjoy! There are literally hundreds of great games, so I'm sure there are at least some you'll like.

Not sure I've ever heard of those titles, butt good god, not sure what to say or expect.

As for options that are out there, generally your top RPG's are going to be from Square Enix, surprisingly Konami with the Castlevania games, and I think a bit of Capcom is in there.

As far as the games I have that I would recommend:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Especially if you played Aria of Sorrow on GBA)
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

(In order of preference. Ecclesia I feel has the hardest main game, followed by Portrait of Ruin, then Dawn of Sorrow)

You could technically consider the Advance Wars games as a form of RPG games with stradegy, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics series. There's Fire Emblem, plus Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time as Nintendo specific entries. Then the remakes of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4 and other games from Square Enix are good choices.
Going to third the recommendation for Radiant Historia. Definitely one of the best jRPGs I've played in the past several years. Chrono Trigger is of course a great option, too, but only if you haven't played the SNES version first. They changed the translation, and it hurts my brain to think of the many classic lines they butchered.

I don't know if I'd recommend Fire Emblem, though. It's my favorite series, but Shadow Dragon is one of the lesser games in the series because it's a remake of the first game, so the story and strategy are watered down quite a bit.

Haven't played it myself, but I've heard good things about Infinite Space.
I am a fan of Western rpgs but some Jrpgs are amazing. The thing is when the amazing ones are giving the most trouble. I played Breath of Fire 3 for Ps1 and while the game wasnt bad, if they cut half of the filler crap out and just ended it at 40 hours for a game-Id be glad. Once I found that there are still 30 hours to go, I said my famous line-I am not interested in a job-I already have one.

I dont care if the game is long but there comes a time when its just drawn out completely. I loved Avernum Escape from the Pit which is a 30-40 hour game. Technically its even longer but you can complete any of the endings.

I just usually go on how long to beat. If the game is longer than 35 hours I mark that game off the list.

No game is worth playing more than a maximum number of hours. No matter how good it is, you get bored with it after a while.

These are the games I own and have beaten

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
Avernum the Pit
Avadon 1
Geneforge 2
Geneforge 1 (Geneforge 3-5 suck, haha)
Icewind Dale 1 (Haha not IWDale 2)
Planescape Torment
Knights of Pen and Paper
Loren Amazon Princess
Planet Stronghold
Shaman King
Eschalon Book 1-3 (Good but The quest is better)
Fallout 1 (Not my favorite I liked Eschalon better and the quest better as well)
The Quest (Excellent game-my favorite turnbased single tile-single char rpg)
Prince of Qin- (Really awesome-is still an rpg just with more action)
Kotor 1 (I hated Kotor 2)

Currently have a few rpgs for DS I havent played.

Orcs and Elves (FPP rpg)

Fighting Fantasy (FPP Rpg- Not sure if its an actionrpg or rpg)

Currently have PS1 and PS2 games I havent Beaten

Chrono Trigger for Ps2. This game looks fun but if its anything like FFantasy like Ive been told I will probably steer clear

Summoner 1 and 2 (I havent played this game or its sequel)

Final Fantasy 4-Already said it above.

Tecmo's Deception for PS2-(Havent played it but I own it)

Wizardry Forsaken Lands for PS2- (This game smells like Etrian Odyssey, haha)

Currently Own games for PSP that havent beaten

Lunar Silver Light Legend for PSP (Currently playing is a lot of fun. I am 1/3 through the game)

Elminage for PSP (This game smells like Etrian Od sharing a bed with Wizardry Forsaken lands, Haha)

Monster Kingdom Jewel Summoner (Looked fun havent played yet)
