It seems that creative people are drawn to media that make use of fantastic, imaginative elements. We have our Tolkien and King and other giants to stand on in the literary world, and Kurosawa and Welles and other directorial giants in the film industry that have inspired artists in all kinds of ways.

So now it's the game industry's turn. Have you ever played a game that was so engaging in its story that it inspired you tell your own stories? Or the art was so unique or colorful you dug out your art board? Tried to make your own game with all the charm of Zelda or intensity of Amnesia: The Dark Descent because you thought you could do it as well if not better? Gotten into 3D modeling or animation because you were amazed what a great game can make those little people do?

In other words, have games, or perhaps just some very special ones in particular, fundamentally shaped the way you try to express yourself creatively?
They've certainly inspired me to try. Mostly with results not worthy of being displayed.

Since I used to make them I guess you'd say they have ;)
Short answer, yes.
No.
I tend to get creative when I see something I think would make a good game, like a TV show.
Unfortunately it never results in anything since I've only got rudimentary programming skills.
Sure!
Shitty games always inspire me to be creative, I redesign them as I play them. Shame I can't code anything but the most basic C# stuff

That's exactly how I felt before I started using XNA. And even after I started using XNA. But before long I was chugging along. You should dive in and see what happens, and although I still wouldn't consider myself great I have a project with Farseer Physics and Krypton (lighting) going that is a fantastic start in a 2D platforming direction, and could help you or anyone else try to integrate those technologies.

Although I guess I'd recommend going in a Java direction for PC cross-platform-ablity... but playing your stuff on an Xbox is pretty damn cool too.

And to the thread in general, yeah, definitely. No question.
Of course! Some games that really shouldnt get stuck in someones head have been burned in to my soul, and made me say "i want to make games like this!". One of those games was Oddworld: Stranger's wrath.
Well, Ultima and Minecraft inspired me to make the Ultima Minecraft Texture Pack - if that counts...

(available now on Ultima Aiera! version 1.9 compatible with MCv1.5_01)
Quite a bit, for certain. I draw fanart, did some sprites a long time ago, tried to make a few add-on levels, and sort of created a text game/RP thing once, all because of, or based on, certain games.
Of course, but not by your references. The creative aspects of the gaming world were fired into me from Day one when I played PowerMonger. It was a dream. I think the future generations have if anything lost creativity from the stagnant and expected form of the games. To me the games are all about the new things, unless it's LOTR2, or something old I like.

Games are about creativity. Games that are about shooting the head shot with amazing realism are about training to shoot someone in the head.

There's that, but I think that things like this are social. It gets a lot easier to make a game if you've got other people working with you.

That wasn't always the case, back in the late 70s and early 80s, one could write a game by oneself in a few weeks, but those days are long gone, these days you really do need a group to make things actually work.

Well, I think there's plenty of games related fanfic out there. And the fact that there's so many actual vocational game design degrees now means, to me at least, that people are inspired. We might get some Scorceses out of those schools, that can only be good for gaming in the end.

Me personally, I do appreciate great creativity, but it'd be hard to say that it gaming specifically that inspires my meager forays into creativity.
