oldschool: I agree. I don't mind buying an expansion pack, but I guess those 'happy' days are over.
I don't regard DLCs and expansion packs that different, _except_ of course that I don't recall there being several tiny expansion packs for retail games. Usually one or two bigger ones, which made it more manageable.
But even back then, I preferred getting GOTY versions with all relevant expansion packs (unofficial, user-made map packs I didn't usually consider vital, I was mostly after official content).
Same goes for episodic/chapter games. I completely skipped buying Heroes Chronicles back in the day from retail, as the publisher seemed to keep churning out new chapters for the game. Hence, I didn't buy it until years later from GOG, as a complete "Heroes Chronicles: All Chapters" bundle.
Let that be a lesson to all publishers. Nickel and dime-ing is uncool, while Minecraft, SPAZ and Witcher 1-2 are supercool.
