RedRagan: Never heard of that before. What happened really? lawsuit or licensing problem?
Public Relations Stunt. Pretended to shut down, when in reality it all was about a re-launch / re-design of the site and the end of GOG's 'Beta' status.

joppo: Weirdly enough, I first heard of GOG because of that so criticized stunt they pulled mid-2011 where they pretended to end their activities.

No, they made a major site redesign, couple new features too. But they decided to pull it in a way that it looked like they had gone bankrupt. People couldn't download their games or buy anything during that week. All that was available was a screen saying they'd have news in a few days.
Needless to say some users were quite pissed. You can check the depths of the forum for older threads and you'll see it.
Edit ninja'd for a few seconds.

I bought a new laptop several years ago and as I was new to PC gaming, I started a "Recommend me PC games" thread on Amazon UK forum. Someone mentioned The Witcher which lead me to GOG. It was then I learnt about the DRM free policy and our relationship blossomed from there.

So, thank you and Happy Birthday GOG.

Well you mention Kotaku before so I have this feeling they simply blow the news up out of proportion too.

Well, sometimes we need to poke the tiger's balls if we want to get noticed though.
I actually got my credit card on the same day I registered. And it has been exhausting for it ever since.

Heh, it also expires this year. That's... ominous.

How come GOG is being so modest about such big anniversary? :o Best wishes!
Happy BDAY GOG!
Happy birthday GOG! You've brought me so much classic gaming goodness. Here's to many more birthdays ahead.
I found out about GOG in 2012 through the Spoony Experiment. Thanks GOG for giving us many years of good old games!
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: We will actually be starting our celebrations from Monday. ;)
Could we get a good old freeware release, per shance? :) Maybe Halloween Harry, Dreamweb, One Must Fall 2097, or DX-Ball, pershance?
5 years of GOGsomeness. Does this mean an awesome new release?
avatar
Roman5: I'm anticipating something either very awesome or something very funny

either way, please don't dissapoint us with just a bland "5 years yay" and end it at that

Do something funny or witty like you did with the GOG office break in video

"What the hell, is that steam?"

"Are we happy?"

"Yeah, we're happy"
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: I believe we will have something to satisfy every discerning taste. :P
Rubs hands. :D
I've figured out the secret of what GOG will do for the anniversary!

Obviously, EVERY game on the site will be sold at a 5% discount. Every sold game will be cursed. But it comes with a free Frogurt! The frogurt is also cursed. But you get your choice of topping! The topping contains potassium benzoate.

QC: The topping contains potassium benzoate.
............

Is that bad?
