I was very disappointed with Halo 2 though , it felt rushed, the story was often incoherent in its presentation, the level design wasn't as tight as the first game and the combat wasn't nearly as satisfying, especially since they ruined the pistol.
Halo 3 was a little better, but it certainly doesn't pull up any trees. I'm a singleplayer only gamer so I cannot really comment on multiplayer.
As a whole the series is pretty run of the mill to be honest, the first one was pretty good, but the sequels are fairly average.
Agree 100%
The first one really was very good. Multiplayer was fun too (with friends, I never played online). Perfect Dark (N64) was the last great console shooter game with a good single player and multiplayer. After that console shooters were either single player games or multiplayer games for a while. Halo was both again.
Halo 2 was *meh*, though even if the multiplayer was still as good as the first. Expansion pack syndrome. I have no desire to get 3.

The first on PC was fantastic. The online multiplayer was great, campaign was good. But then the second came out and well... it sucked. The multiplayer I found EXTREMELY boring at parties (when my friends couldn't stop playing it :( ) and the campaign? Oh man, it was repetitive, the story was trash and the it was boring. The popularity boomed and I had no idea why. Then that third one came out... I liked it at first sight but that changed quickly. I came to realize that this was an HD halo 2 with new guns. Bad game. Overrated game. Horrible community.

I wish I had the chance to play Perfect Dark. I loved Goldeneye (especially the multiplayer, which was crazy configurable - I used to love matches with proximity mines or throwing daggers) and I'm sure I would loved Perfect Dark as well.
I hear the sequel wasn't nearly as good, though.

The thing that I think really got me to like 3 more is the replay option. Something they don't seem to advertise is that the game records matches (including campaign coop) which can make for some great fun watching when you see how bad your mates were doing.

IMO, PD was significantly better than Goldeneye, but similar in a lot of ways. Easily one of the best FPS's of all time. Timsplitters 2 had a better multiplayer, but I think PD was probably the best overrall console shooter, ever. Its single-player campaign was really fun.
I didn't like the sequel. Oddly enough, I still can't really figure out why. There's nothing that stands out as particularly bad.
Get a copy of PD (N64) on ebay. It should be cheap. Sold a bajillion copies. One of those rare bestselling games that deserved every penny of its commercial success. My friends used to come over and we'd play that game until 5AM.
Occasionally, I'll fire it up. I remember hearing my friend John yelling "No farsights! They're cheap," every time I play it. LOL. Most overpowered weapon ever.

That or wait a few months till it comes out on the xbox live arcade*, that way you'll have the good game with a controller that doesn't suck (I know some people liked the n64 controller but I have no idea how), higher res textures that look half decent and online multiplayer
*System Requirements: Xbox 360

Played the first one on PC, thought it was fun and challenging, with nice AI. I think there's a disproportionate amount of hate towards it, simply because it's hailed as the second coming of Christ, when it's merely a good game.
Nothing that hasn't been said before. Hooray for redundancy.

The first one on PC wasn't bad, I'll admit that. The second one on the PC... meh.
I also have firsthand information that Halo 3 for the PC will be coming out on Christmas 2098. So preorder now and don't delay!

I DO understand why it was so popular. For it's time it:
(a) looked great
(b) finally perfected console FPS controls. (no game before had 100% gotten them right.. though many were close)
(c) had pretty cool driveable vehicles
(d) was the shiny launch game of a shiny new console.
I also understand that the multiplayer is fun...
But, as a singleplayer FPS gamer, used to PC FPS games*, I found it totally average. (and I didn't mind the Flood much at all)
The outside environments looked nice, but the inside environments were TERRIBLE. You just played through the same rooms AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN. God it was dull.
Driving was kinda fun.. but i think it was mostly designed for 2 players.
Story was generic and meh.
A few parts were great fun, and the guns weren't bad, but as a singleplayer game it wasn't up to scratch at all.
Never bothered with Halo 2 or 3.
*but NOT a graphics's whore or elitist fanboy.. usually quite enjoy average old FPS games actually..
Trust me if you thought Halo was bad Halo 2 was worse. It had some new features like playing as another character for part of the game and dual wielding weapons but it was still pretty bad, especially the graphics. Another thing I hated about the first one was the slower than heck movement speed. This guy's supposed to be an enhanced super soldier thats stronger and 'faster' but I could run circles around him in my sleep.
On the other hand though Halo 3 is awesome. If you ever have the chance to rent it you will be buying it soon thereafter. Loads of weapons, the Masterchief actually moves at a fast pace, many new vehichles, a very varied group of interior and exterior spaces (i hated all of those one after another rooms too) dual wielding weapons. Fire from a fixed gun or use the Masterchief's strength to rip the gun right off its mount to use on the move (capacity goes from unlimited to 200 after this though) and an incredibly story. Ive played it many times and I still love it.

Halo, oddly enough, was one of the first FPS games I ever played. It also had the advantage of being shiny while still functioning on my computer. For those reasons, it holds a special place in my heart.
I resent those who claim that you need to be an idiot/tasteless fool/drunken frat boy to enjoy the game. I consider it a good game, if somewhat lacking in creativity, because it definitely sated my desire to blow shit up and because it had a set of difficulty levels which were actually reasonable for a gamer of my caliber ("Easy" was actually easy, for once).
Halo 2 was nice, but too short. I'm not big on online multiplayer, so I was disappointed with the length of the single-player campaign.

That was Rainbow Six Vegas and don't even get me started on what happened to THAT franchise...
