Um, did you notice that the school is free for everyone? Not sure why you and the poster you've quoted decided to latch onto the small grant provided to encourage more females to attend but apparently Google feels it is a big enough issue for them to provide specific support. I mean how many females were in your last programming class? I'm quite sure that these super-smart peeps will discontinue this kind of grant when they're seeing a certain level-set of genders attending. Oh and did I mention "The school is free for everyone."?

The thing is that I see that every single thread that even dares to mention females in any context whatsoever ends up with these kinds of highly-charged, negative comments. Specifically, both of you don't seem to post very much - but hey, a thread that happens to mention supporting females and you're right there with a trollish remark. This is exactly why females need a bit of a push to open the door to a male-dominated field. Just sayin' and thanks for proving my point for me ;-p

Lastly, I am a mother, obviously female and I went back to school to learn to code at a pretty advanced age. Trust me when I say that it takes courage to face a room full of 20-something guys with exactly no other females in the room. It is daunting to say the least. So next time you're tempted to bash something - consider that it could be your mother posting about a cool FREE opportunity for everyone (oh and gals, here's a bit of extra incentive to brave a field full of men, as a sidebar to the main conversation).

I guess it used to be that math was pushed on males more than females - and it kind of snowballed into a mindset that only guys are programmers/mathematicians/engineers/technical fields. Women were encouraged to pursue writing and liberal arts etc... So with generations being brought up in a kind of "men are good at this and women are good at that", it's going to take some societal rewiring to change that mindset.

Plus it is only really, really recently that women have been allowed into actual combat situations...though I certainly applaud anyone that actively decides to serve and protect their country in such a manner.

~off to my Statistics class - at least I'm fairly certain I won't be the only female ;-p~

The only language I'd learn though would be sweet talk rather than basic. xD :P

Do not take comments like that so seriously. I have nothing against supporting females.

Though, it would be interesting to see what happens when some well-known company (in any field) says "we give more support to males than to females"...

Well in the military, females join and train with mostly, other females.

But the job isn't exclusively female.

Yeah but being a female soldier doesn't require you to be the only female somewhere surrounded by hundreds of men.

Depends on which female we are talking about, I guess. Some will find the military easier than being surrounded by 100s of guys and some will find it easier to be surrounded by 100s of guys.

I'd imagine all of the innuendos referencing Basic or C++ would get annoying though. :P
