All this talk of Macedonia's gonna make me fire up Rome: Total War really soon.

Elenarie: Political correctness and literal understanding of the words, yey!
Such words and metaphorical usages just wouldn't function at all, without shared implicit values and representations. If there was no widespread homophobia in our society, "this is gay" would mean nothing more derogatory than "this is cupboard" or "this is right-handed". There's nothing neutral in there. It's still based upon, and conveying, popular thoughts associations. Reaffirms under which of the "good" & "bad" column "gay" goes by default. This usage maintains homophobic common sense, and perpetuates itself thanks to it.

Merely pointing at it with my ruthless and implacable finger of justice. Up to you to take it in consideration or not.

Dzsono: Did anyone see that cartoon by The Onion recently? It's rather distasteful, but the message is clear: everyone should be allowed to make fun of each other without fearing for their safety. Or, to make the same point in a different way, FREE SPEECH!
Amen. Just because some very few bigots in this world post some completely distasteful material, shouldn't give anyone the right to take people's lives/severely threaten others because of it. It's a pretty sad state of affairs. Regarding the violent protests, is it any wonder that a lot of people in the West then view the Muslim world the way they do when this happens? It's unlikely the same thing would happen if roles were reversed. *le sigh*

Yet the media doesn't show Imams and Sheikhs condemning the violence and calling for peaceful demonstrations. I would suggest taking ones media consumption with a grain of salt. If you were to talk to many Egyptians they would tell you this is merely being used as an excuse by hardliners in hopes of establishing a Theocracy.

Only thing I fail at is making Syracuse remotely profitable (seriously, I always forget to be a jerk and just exterminate their populace and nobody ever wants to take it as a gift).

What did I fail at anyways? Because I've been trying to derail the unpleasantness!

Oh, I know. That's why I typically don't pay attention to mainstream news media as they almost always perpetuate a certain image - did anyone mention Fox yet? =/ I was talking in general about the average Joe, not myself. I'm saddened by those events, but I don't have a greater disregard of Muslims in general due to actions of an extremist minority. I just wished this wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Telika: Me too (as I share the exact same opinion about patriotism/nationalism).
It's not his opinion about nationalism or patriotism that caused me to call him an imbecile, and frankly, a careful reading of my very short and simple post shouldn't have given you that conviction. Him railing against "freaking retards" just reminded me of glasshouses.

If you want me to think of you as an imbecile too, just agree with sentiments like this one:

and similarly nuanced criticisms of other groups of people. And no, I'm not religious myself.

Agreed, it is sad especially extremists on both sides of the issue use it to perpetuate hatred. C'est la vie.

Ideas like Elenarie's are part of the problem with modern politics. Mature and nuanced dialogue <> BURN THEM ALL!!!

Delekhan: From the Balkans...that explains your Barbarism at least.
Now, I find this quite offensive, regardless of my stance towards Elenarie's posts.
Just don't. Seriously.
