Aaahhh..finally got it. I had a choice, could have picked West Bend, Wisconsin, but Portland out-ranks West Bend.

I'll take a stab in the dark, Sapporo-shi...or Satsuma-chou? (Don't bother replying if you don't want to give anything away.)

Here's my hint...despite my mayor's intentions I would still prefer nobody know of my homeplace...we do and we don't have a lot of rural areas.
Edit: Our state flower has a range in Japan, Italy, and Turkey, but I don't believe its range includes us.

I'd give another hint, but it would almost give it away (I guess that in itself is kind of a hint). Thanks for allowing me to feel clever. If I can think of another good hint, I'll edit my first post.
Edit: Hopefully that helps, but not too much.

Fuunnnyy...It IS clever. I am stumped, but I'll keep working on it.
Maybe someone else will jump it with some ideas on this one.

Geographically, closer to New Jersey. The way some people act, may culturally resemble Western plains states more. Also, where I live, some people may want you to think it's Sun Belt Southern California (that is in reference to the business investments that occurred during the 80's and 90's). Although, I do like some Western movies, older ones especially (older as in Clint Eastwood or John Wayne, not Gene Autry).

One more hint: one day of the year, the rest of the world cares about us (almost 2, but not quite).
