Tag Team Game Rumble!

You could hear the sound of crowds going wild! You could hear hear the epic guitar riffs going off! You could hear the sound of muscular bodies slamming against the arena floor! No, this wasn't the echoes of Wrestlemania XXX. It was our very own special [url=http://www.gog.com/gamerumble]Battle of the Games 2014 promo, with stables of amazing games facing off each other three by three in explosive combat. You, dear GOGgers, were the referees. Now, the time has come for the grand finale! We know who won, and who did not. All of the participating games are now simultaneously on sale for the next 48 hours!
Looks like I underestimated the appeal of tower defense...

joppo: I'm surprised Anomaly's side is pulling ahead. Defender's Quest has been on promo with great discounts several times already; supposedly whoever wanted it got it ages ago.

Mnemon: Logic fallacy. Just because I might want a game doesn't mean I absolutely will pick it up when it's discounted. [Case with Defender's Quest]. Money for games is luxury - I only really buy any if I don't need money elsewhere / am not saving up for something else. Given that GOG's promos come around fairly regularly there's no hurry, either.
No, that explains why you didn't buy it on the many chances you had before. But when you look at sales statistically your case is just a blip registering - possibly outside a curve, likely to happen on any study group. For every time you passed on a promo because of money someone else was saying "Great, thank god this promo didn't happen last month or I wouldn't be able to buy". So statistically they even out... Unless you mean that there is a myriad of people like you that had their reasons (financial or otherwise) not to buy from those promos back then but now they want to buy, and on average they also like TDs more than platformers. Hell of a link you'd have to establish here.

Answer me this: given two games, ignoring their specifics like usual price, genre, metacritic score, installer size, numerology applied to its hash, the developer's zodiac sign, etc. All you have to go to derive an answer to my question is: One of them was released years earlier and has been on promo several times. The other was released just 4 months ago and never saw a promo. Which one is more likely to have seen more purchases from GOG's customers? And as a follow-up question, given game A graces more shelves wouldn't game B interest more people (because of those who want both and have only one game)?

DQ is very good. I don't know about the two others except people have generally good things to say about them.
The other three games are less well known - Ethan was at the bottom of the best sellers on gog for a while as was Guacamelee - not sure what that says, if anything about the game themselves or the original pricing - Bree+ i have (from a bundle) but it seems ok the little i have played....

Yeah, DQ is an excellent game. It's the only tower defense game I'll play. It hardly occurred to me that people still don't have it.

Red_Frog: I thought precisely the same thing about Unreal Tournament. Precisely! I was surprised to see it trounce the others. Not that I dislike UT, but I honestly thought there couldn't possibly be people out there who didn't already have it.
This! I think that if Grim Fandango is ever released on GOG its second promo will perform pretty awfully because everyone will either have bought it on the first promo or full-price at release.

Good games always sell a good amount regardless of whether its been on sale a lot - look at NWN2, Deus Ex,PST, Spelunky etc......

Well, I think my train of thought was along the lines of the fact that Mr. Bree+ and Ethan had not been in a promo. Regardless, I'll pick them both up (if I can successfully pull off some financial juggling). The $3 in savings for winning the vote is icing on the cake, really.

It's also possible that games that have been on sale countless times before are still selling because newcomers to GoG are buying them. There's also the possibility that some people hold off on one sale to tackle their backlog, let their wallet heal etc. There is demand for the game, just not at that point in time. Personally, there's a few games I'm holding off on because I have a big enough backlog already, some of which are best enjoyed with a joystick (I dun have one right now) so there's no point in getting them right now.

I'm just a glutton really, as the 371 games plus DLC on my shelf can attest to. I honestly don't need to buy more, but I do. It's usually spurred on by sales. Heck, I've even bought games that are anathema to me, genre-wise. I think I'd be in the minority, but I doubt I really am. I'm really tempted to pick up CIII, Pharoah and Zeus even though I have a passing interest on them. Also, looking at Eschalon book 3 to complete my collection. My wallet indeed hates me.
I think the people are overdoing this. Not everybody buys impulsively on every sale. I for instance bought my first Witcher game now (Witcher 2). Not everybody is a collector and has tons of surplus money ready to buy and this sale has its charm with the battle of the games :)

Same here. I do draw the line when it comes to most RPGs normally, but recently i've found myself buying both The Witcher games. Same for managerial games, I remember dreading Gangsters because of its high difficulty, yet guess what I bought when it went on sale?
I bought the Pharaoh-Zeus-Caesar games as well, though I guess they'll be equally difficult. Same for the rollercoaster tycoon games. Never saw the point of buying a game that gives you the stress of real-life business. I buy games to relax.
But somehow these sales make them temporarily irresistible.
Today I'm not buying any of those Indie games, though I've been very tempted to go for Guacamelee. I need to be strong, because my bank account is ever weakening.
Haha, I voted as 1st today :p - Gothic.
nvm ;)
