The Gothic Complete Bundle is on sale on Steam, and seeing as I already own Gothic 1 and 2 on GOG, and the price is the same for this bundle and buying Gothic 3 and 4 separately is the same, I thought I'd ask the GOG community whether Gothic 3 and 4 are worth it.

I see they've not done great on MetaCritic, but I'm quickly losing my faith in that site and professional reviews in general, and I'd much rather have the opinion of you good people.

I am also curious about this bundle, as I don't own any of the Gothic games. This would seem like a logical purchase if I wanted them because it comes with all the games and is fairly cheap.

Gothic 3 is described as an unfinshed and unplayable mess, even by fans of the series. It has appeared in press "worst game" lists and doesn't hear many kind words.

Gothic 4 seems to be commonly considered "not Gothic". Given my experience with 2 and overwhelming negativity thrust upon 3 maybe that's not such a bad thing. But given that it's supposed to be extremely linear, that's not really the change I was looking for in the series.

Oh and there's a demo of that one at Gamershell so you can give it a try if you're keen.

I tried the demo for Gothic 4, it seems like pretty good fun.

Gothic 1 & 2 are amazing. Gothic 3 is fun, but only with the fan patch.


Gothic 4 is Gothic in name only, since the devs for Gothic 1-3 left after they made 3 to make Risen.

Gothic 4 is the worst game of 2010, if the demo is any indication. Good grief it was awful.

If you haven't played Gothic 1 or 2 yet wait on 3. They are must-plays.

Years ago this was the case, but the fan patch repaired the game quite a lot. It's very playable now, and a great RPG experience if you ask me. The same people that fan-patched Gothic 3 patched Forsaken Gods, which is included in the pack.

Gothic 4 is a casual game, not really an RPG. It's pretty and the combat can be fun, but know what you are getting into... more like Fable than Gothic, and the voice acting is terrible.

I'll consider it, but I make no promises. My funds are quite limited, so I'm not even sure I'll be able to afford one, let alone two. Still, I'll keep you in mind.

I somehow managed to break gothic 3 completely, I didnt choose a side though I had wiped out the hashashin(ie cleared every town dead) and It wouldnt let me choose a side between orc and human as my rep wasnt high enough with either and after consulting the guide I couldnt obtain enough points to allign to either lol.

I also hated how you could kills like a army of orcs or humans, only to be killed by a petty wolf with ease

I bought the collectors edition of 4 and it did look good though Im grinding through other games. I may get the forsaken gods pack due to the cheap price.

Play the demo of Gothic 4, and understand, the game does not change. That's it.

Oh, I did, it seems pretty decent to me and worth the asking price. :)

I have to agree that Gothic 4 is very dissappointing, I played through the prologue and enjoyed it but soon after quickly got tired of it and never finished the game.

I can't speak to the fan-made patches of Gothic 3, and I expect they are well made, but as to the original it's generally thought of as being the lowest point in the series. Some prefer 4 to 3 even.

If you like Gothic 1 and 2 a good spiritual descendant might be deep silver's Risen. Definately give that a go if you haven't yet :)

Theres also a community patch for Gothic 3 that makes the game playable and fun....... but I don't know if it will work with the steam version.

If you say so. From what I've read the game was a long, long way from finished when it was thrown out the door. I already tried my luck with the KOTOR 2 fan patch and look how that turned out. If a game is that unfinshed then I'm not convinced it can be saved with any amount of third party patching.

That and after Gothic 2 I'm not inclined to take any chances on a game actually deemed to be worse.
