Unfortunately I have no idea where (if anywhere) it can be found, but I think it should be mentioned anyway: The old turnbased Warlords games were great. At least the third one. If anyone knows a place to get this game, do share :)
Warlords 3 Darklords Rising or Reign of Heroes, I believe the full title is. Reign of Heroes was the basic game, Darklords Rising an expansion?

Warlords III: Reign of Heroes was the first game, Warlords III: Darklords Rising was standalone expansion.

I remember Warlords II Deluxe which was great and Warlords 3 Battlecry which wasn't.
This is an impressive list up to now. Actually we can also collect games with online activation here, only I do not care much for them, but that doesn't matter for you, so just post what you want. :)

This is kind turned based 4x style, but Sword of the Stars is pretty good, I however, am terrible at it.
If you are looking for something similar to Master of Orion and Homeworld, the key word being similar, not exact but close enough.

As regards the topic, how about:
- Galactic Civilizations (I would get the complete edition of the sequel)
- Space Empires IV (or V)
- Imperium Galactica 2 (pauseable real-time)
You need Impulse for GalCiv, but I think Space Empires is pretty much DRM free. Imperium Galactica 2 may be difficult to find; it only has a CD check, as far as I know.

- Age of Wonders (I - III) : Basically HOMM with tech research and more strategy ; both in the strat. map and in battle).
- The Battle Isle serie
- AGEOD Games : Rise of Prussia (which has the best AI in a video game I know) and Birth of America : very historic simulation. Start with BoA because RoP is extremely difficult due to awesome IA. I have not played the other AGEOD games.
- By experience, people liking turn based games tend to like Paradox games, esp. Europa Universalis III, very easy to access.

Fantasy Wars & Elven Legacy are really nice games in the style of Fantasy General (a fantasy-based version of Panzer General, which is in itself a great turn based strategy game). You can get Fantasy Wars and Panzer General II on GOG.
Also, the Massive Assault-series needs a mention. It's very much like the Battle Isle games, and _tons_ of fun.

Lords of Magic- Great little fantasy turn-based Strat. Reminds of Heroes of Might and Magic. It has an amazing soundtrack, and multiple civilizations. I really liked it.

Silent storm, Silent Storm sentinels and Hammer and Sickle are good ones. You control individual soldiers instead of tanks and platoons. Hammer and Sickle has an rpg like story where what you do will affect what happens in the story.

I also liked Commandos 1, much more than 2 whose graphics I liked but the real time gameplay is just not for me.

I got galciv2 and have not played it much. Is Master of orion easier to get into?

Its much older and IMO simpler. Master of Orion 1 and 2 are classics, the combats are nice. Number 1 has an User Interface from 1992, so its not as helpful as we are used to. No context help. I could adopt it in only a few minutes because I remembered everything. Number 2 is better and maybe easier to get into but the planet management (building list) takes time. Master of Orion 3 is complex and boring and buggy and widely disregarded. Gal Civ 2 is okay, relatively easy to use but more complex than MoO 1 and 2. So its up to you. :)
