I've got a dual core 2,1 GHz and 3 GB RAM and I'm using Vista 32-bit. I don't know much about graphic cards, but at least you've got one. ;)

Unfortunately, like I said, I have next to no experience with recent AAA titles. The only ones I can think of that I can run are Oddworld: Munch's Oddyssee (but not Stranger's Wrath), Tomb Raider Legend, A Vampyre Story (whereas Gray Matter runs a bit slow for me) and Sam & Max Season One (no issues at all). All others are more or less indie. Well, actually half of the ones I mentioned above could be considered kind of indie, too - hard to draw the line. ;)

RPGs: Avadon - The Black Fortress, Dungeons of Dredmor, Fortune Summoners; I used to be able to run Torchlight okay until my graphic card died, now it's a bit too laggy; Death Spank could have run a little smoother but I was still able to play through it and enjoy it; Mount & Blade should work, too, but I wasn't able to get into it, so I leave it someone else to recommend it

Tower Defense: Plants vs. Zombies, Unstoppable Gorg

Puzzles, Platfomers etc.: Portal (except for one glitch with my onboard card that makes the portals opaque), Aquaria, Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac, Blocks That Matter; Puzzle Agent was a bit slow but playable

Anyway, probably not exactly what you're looking for. ;)

You have the laptop version of pretty much my desktop:

I don't play the newest AAA games, obviously, but SC2 runs fine in medium with shadows as low as possible (unless you're protoss like me, and the nice blue ring when building pylons lags the system, which sorta forces me to use low settings to get WC3 graphics...ugh).

The Witcher: EE runs fine with minimal lags, though, so you might want to try that. Gothic 3 with patch runs fine, too. Oblivion, I've only played years ago but I think I recall getting 20-40ish fps, so you might make some comparisons there.

EDIT: This is all on WinXP, by the way. I only have Win7 on my laptop, which has totally different specs.

Terraria comes to mind. Limbo, Gemini Rue... basically most indie games.

Strange that the Witcher EE runs fine on your desktop but runs like garbage on my laptop. I'm using Windows Vista though.

Ys Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin.

Technically they're old games but they've only recently been released outside Japan so it's new to us.

Though I don't know if there's any region restrictions on them.

Hmm maybe it's a combination of Vista and some other stuff.. I'll check my exact settings when I get home. What resolution do you use? I'm always at 1024x768, and minimum shadows, usually minimal shader too for demanding games.

If it runs, you can play a lot of recent (so to say) games.

Your computer is better than mine. Well, I have another gb of ram, but a weaker graphics card & processor. So the first thing I would recommend is another gb of RAM or two (should set you back far less than a game, just make sure that you get the right type) and a good system cleanup. It all comes down to how good your graphic card is, I guess, and then everyone's system setup is different. Of the games listed by AFnord above I know for sure that The Witcher, Aztaka, Eschalon (don't ask me why), Jamestown, Orcs Must Die!, Trine and Legend of Grimrock were too demanding for my "weak" rig, even on their lowest settings. And King's Bounty was painfully sluggish in combat. You may have more luck with them, seeing that you seem to have an acceptable graphic card, just saying. Btw, what Shader version does your graphic card support? I think an advanced Shader version (preferably 3.0) is essential for a lot of these more recent games. If your graphic card doesn't support it, the games will probably lag no matter what.

I took some shots of my video options for TW:EE, hopefully it helps since it sounds like you already have the game. I also took a short video of the gameplay (well I wanted to try out Bandicam.. :p). It will be available in 30 min through this here link.

Before starting to record, it looked like I was getting 45fps max, like when I made Geralt stare at the wall, 28-39ish standing still, 25-28ish running around town. Oh, and Bandicam tells me the game was running in DirectX9.0.

Those specs sound decent. I guess the mobility 8600m GT is pretty weak. :(

A 8600GT supports Shader Model 4.0. I did by the way not notice the m in the graphics card name though, so my list might not be applicable (I have a 8600GT with 256mb VRAM).

Even though I don't reach the min system requirements for some of those games, they ran just fine (low graphics settings, of course).
