DaCostaBR: I tried thinking about great old soundtracks made in the west but couldn't come up with any, figured it's because a lot of western developers at the time were focusing on PC and I only got into PC gaming recently. Also, despite the generous offer of soundtracks with the games here in GOG, I never sat down to listen to any.
So, do you have any good songs to show me?
Do note that there is a difference in how the soundtracks of many older PC games are used compared to that of the older console titles. In many ways they are more similar to the modern game soundtracks in that they try to set the mood, but don't aim to be as catchy or memorable. A good soundtrack (for setting the mood) should not be one you actively think about when hearing it.
As for great soundtracks, have you heard the one from
Chaos Gate?
Other notable and memorable songs from PC games include
Baba Yetu (Civ 4) Stones (Ultima) Hell March (Red Alert) A new Day Begins (Republic: The Revolution) Pride or Pain (Knights of Honor) The Traveler (Crusader: No Remorse) By the way, notice the huge jump in quality between the early & mid 90's games.
