Garugo: Blue Dragon (X360)
I thought this was widely regarded as terrible?

Was it? I kinda enjoyed the for as long as I played it. It may have been the art style since it was by Akira Toriyama. I didn't mind the game, though, just didn't get very far into it before something else came along and grabbed my attention. The battle system was decent, the only problem I could really find (mind you, I haven't played it in years, so my memory of it is probably lacking) is that the trophies you could get for it would end up taking hundreds of hours to get even if you were aiming for them, according to forums I've read about them.

Nonetheless, it was a lot better than Infinite Undiscovery, I tried to like that game but just couldn't bring myself to play it for more than a few minutes at a time...
Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2 on the Game Boy Advance are extremely rare specimens in that they're JRPGs that I can actually stand for more than five minutes. Nice story line that starts out as as the usual "kill the baddies and save the world" sort of fare but later gets quite a bit deeper and doesn't involve any bullshit love story between your party members and includes a rather interesting class mechanic.

That's all I've got.
I would also go with Star ocean 2, only one I played in the series but it was great. Then those wild arms 1 and 3.
Shadow hearts 1 too. Fun and a bit dark at the same time. Great.
PS1 and 2 had so many good ones.

Nowadays we mostly can play old ones again or some indie cthulhu. Well, haven't played that yet but breath of death VII was a fun little thing.

Didn't know that grandia 2 was in PC, Played the first it was good but I think it is a bit overrated but that's just me.

Couldn't agree more. Both are brilliant games.

l0rdtr3k: Xenogears and Xenosaga are great JRPGs

SimonG: Xenogears was great. I would love to play Xenosage, but the DS collection isn't sold in Europe.
Download it already! You can buy if they ever release it.

StingingVelvet: I've heard these are awesome before, thanks for reminding me. Is the combat good? I hate a JRPG with poor or irrelevant combat.
Are you fond of Anime? The games have japanese animation on them and many Japanese pop/anime/culture cliches so an anime/japan fan would be more likelly to like the games.

Wait, you play JPRG for the actual gameplay? I thought the pulling point was just the pop music and cute anime girls in your party
And bringing this list bang up to date, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower all are very critically acclaimed games for the Wii. Admittedly, only Xenoblade is a straight-up JRPG: Last Story is apparently very action-y, probably closer to a Tales of X game than a Final Fantasy, and Pandora's Tower is pretty much Bulletstorm's whip mechanic according to the Japanese, with a hint of Devil May Cry and a large slab of time limit.

I want to +1 this as well. I haven't tried the new Golden Sun on the DS, but the two for Game Boy Advance are great.

Another one I'd want to recommend is Mardek. It's free and can be played in your browser (don't let this scare you though, it has just as much depth as any full-price JRPG). Unfortunately there's only three chapters out now and the developer doesn't really have much interest in finishing chapter four, but the three chapters currently available are still among my favorite JRPGs.
Vagrant Story
Valkyrie Profile
Most of the Shin Megami Tensei games are excellent, especially on the PS2

Shadow Hears 1+2 are great too

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky is my favorite from this gen

Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story have gotten a lot of good reviews, but I haven't played either yet

I agree that Alundra and Suikoden are worth playing.

Golden Sun 1 (the only GS I have played), on the other hand is one of the most boring jrpg I have ever played. It looks cute, but that's about it. Some may say like 90% of jrpg...
