Related to my console game thread, a lot of JRPG discussion erupted. I loved JRPGs on the SNES but never really respected the genre after that. The only PS1 JRPGs I played were the Final Fantasy games, and ditto on the PS2.

So... what are the best JRPGs since the SNES regardless of platform?

Post a link with your answer if possible so I can research them.

*running away*
Persona 4
Persona 3 / FES / Portable

That is all.
Final Fantasy 7

Legend of Legia
Both of those are ps1 games that I still play.

And I found Septerra Core here on GoG.com

I've heard these are awesome before, thanks for reminding me. Is the combat good? I hate a JRPG with poor or irrelevant combat.
Legend of Dragoon on PS1 was nice, if you can get past the tons of cliches.

Also, Cthulhu Saves the World is a great parody of JRPGs, I can't praise it enough.
Hmm.. the stories are a bit... wonky? But I really did enjoy, for their positive attributes, both Chrono Cross and Xenogears on the PlayStation 1.

I had high hopes for ps2 japanese RPGs but none of them really shone for me. I probably had the most fun with Wild Arms 3, but I'm not sure I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It's limited and quirky, but I certainly adored the time I spent with it.
Xenogears and Xenosaga are great JRPGs

Was that the wild west one? I remember reading about it, never played it.

Wild Arms series overall had a wild west theme, although the theming is fairly lightweight. You're still ON A PLANAT and have to SAVE THE WORLD eventually. Still, I liked the theming, what with ghost towns, songs involving whistling, and fighting bosses with shotguns.

Wild Arms (1) for playstation probably nailed that the best. It has SNES-type 2d towns and dungeons with (quite bad) 3d enemies to fight. Noteably, there were a variety of puzzles as part of the dungeoning experience (simple, zelda 2d type stuff).

Wild Arms 3 I enjoyed for the overly long extending story "but wait, there's more!" in a series of reveals. There's also a very likeable (to me) rival character that I fell for.

IMO, WIld Arms 2 is bad, and I couldn't finish 4, but others may have other experiences.

Xenogears was great. I would love to play Xenosage, but the DS collection isn't sold in Europe.

In battle mechanics of Persona series you have to use a system of element weakness and strenght.
When you are in battle, you can scan an enemy to tell if he has some kind of weakness (scan is not always avaiable so it's trial and error sometimes), and you can adjust your strategies accordingly (use persona with different skill).
You have to plan your daytime to raise your battle skills, and do not forget, that your character is in school and also has to study :)
By the course of the game, you can develop "Social Links" with different characters. Social Link represents a single Tarot Arcana, and raising a particular Social Link increases the experience bonus that main character receive when fusing Personas of that Arcana.
"Bonds of people is the true power." :)
Both games are great (even if there's no dwarves in them), you can always check the reviews / playthroughs on youtube first, but watch out for spoilers :)

Gonna go with some I haven't seen listed yet, and the list is going to be far from complete as far as good JRPGs I've played since the SNES, but here goes:

Haven't tried it myself, but I heard good things about "Mother 3" (sequel to earthbound) for GBA. Unfortunately it wasn't released outside of Japan, so you'd have to use other means to play the fan english translation.
