It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

langurmonkey: I have 8 plugins active and one extension(Flagfox).
Disable them, check if the speed improves. If it does, then successively re-enable plugins as long as it doesn't slow down again.

How much RAM do you have in your machine, which version of Windows do you use, and do you have typically other memory-hungry applications running alongside your browser?

Psyringe: Personally I think that Firefox is the best choice right now.

Chrome is also very popular, but many people are suspicious about Google's tendency to grab and evaluate every bit of data it can get. Supposedly the browser has been made less intrusive over time, but I don't really trust it.

Opera was a great browser for years - efficient, innovative, very customizable. Since version 11 however, its quality is declining steadily. From version 12 onwards I had so many problems with it (for some reason some of my games would stutter and become unplayable while Opera was running in the background, closing Opera solved the problem immediately) that I finally switched to Firefox.

Internet Explorer is always available, and has much improved security now, but it's still a Microsoft product. Many people use it as a second option if their main browser doesn't work on a given page.

Why are you looking for alternatives to Firefox in the first place?

langurmonkey: Firefox has been running like shit lately. The performance is horrible. Explorer9 runs so much better but I don't want to use Explorer9.

Psyringe: Do you have any plugins active?

Firefox by itself is pretty fast, or at least not considerably slower than any other browser. Plugins are often programmed very inefficiently though.
While I'm with you on this, I do find Firefox runs just fine; Mozilla has the alternative 64bit variant Waterfox which I find runs quite well too, and doesn't have many of the issues claimed by some to be having with Firefox.

Psyringe: For a detailed comparison of browsers, check the Web Browser Grand Prix at tom's hardware. This site regularly checks the performance of browsers for a couple of years now, they have a pretty sophisticated testing parcours.

The detailed results show strengths and weknesses of the browsers in various scenarios (for OS X and WIndows 7).

The end results (next page) show Chrome leading slightly before Firefox, with IE and Opera trailing far behind.

langurmonkey: Ok, thanks for the information.
Please note, the first link I gave was outdated (it was a 2010 article). I've now updated it to the most recent test from Sep 2012.

Interesting. I wonder why they didn't include Safari in the Windows section. I'm an FF man myself.

Roman5: Give Opera a shot

One of the best browsers out there right now, imo, they really improved it over time

Garugo: I'll add my vote for Opera. I've loved it since I started using it a few years ago. Right now I've got Opera for the majority of my browser usage, and Firefox basically only for a handful of sites that don't like Opera.
I totally agree with you as long as you're talking about versions from Opera 4 through Opera 10 (all of which I used as my main browser, and recommended to lots of other users)

Imho, however, Opera - which I had been using for more than 10 years - is on the decline since the Speed Dial 2 disaster from version 11. After the browser dropped functionality that was important for me and many others, and the moderators on the official forums deleting my posts, _changing_ one of my posts without notifying me or even adding a note to the post that it was changed, one moderator banning other users for asking questions about a non-working function, one moderator refusing to answer my questions and refusing to tell me how I can contact her superior, moderators removing a simple _mention_ of Firefox from posts, and further degrading browser quality in Opera 12 (extremely long waiting times on GamersGate, extreme stutter in Guild Wars that goes away as soon as I close Opera, display compatibility problems ...), I finally decided that it the undeniably great past of this browser unfortunately doesn't justify putting up with the current crap anymore.

It took a while to make Firefox work the way I wanted it to, but since then, I haven't looked back.

Check the first page of the test, they explain that they regard Safari for Windows as discontinued.

I have 8GB of memory and I use Windows 7. I disabled several plugins an Firefox seems to be running a little bit better now but not a huge difference.

Huh. I wonder why Apple did that. It sounds like they did a competent job with the Win version.
Chrome is also getting slower with each build, at least in my opinion.

I would recommend Opera, but I'm not using it myself lately. Somehow, it doesn't cooperate with my router nicely on some pages, GOG included.

Hmm, with 8 GB (and a decent CPU), Firefox should be pretty quick - at least, definitely not slower than other browsers.

Are you sure that it's the browser that's causing the slow performance? Are you using proxies or VPN with Firefox that you don't use with IE?

No proxies or VPN. Maybe it is my video card. My video card is a Intel HD 4000. Maybe it is Shockwave Flash? When I'm at Youtube, it really gets bad.
Attached below, this thread as viewed through Netscape Navigator 4.04.

The choice is clear...

LOL the word Netscape, brings back so many memories of an ancient time.

Odd. But it's possible, Flash isn't the most efficient piece of software ...

Anyway, one good thing about browsers is that you can install several of them and check them out. They shouldn't interfere with each other apart from what your system considers to be the default browser, and that can be easily changed in every browser once you made a decision.

You could install Pale Moon (a Forefox variant with a focus on efficiency), Chrome, Opera, and Maxthon alongside each other and simply check the sites that are most important to you.
