All CSI games (except for NY, that game sucks so bad...)
Culpa Innata
Still Life
try Blade Runner - its one of the best detective game I have ever played!
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/blade-runner

It has CSI kind of stuff, questioning suspects, hunting replicants, great story, deductions elements. You cant go wrong with it :)

Also great cyber-punk atmosphere
But it is easier to find CSI on digital download platforms than Blade Runner :)
true -_- still it is worth to look for :)

karacho: a serious tone would be nice, but for example the tex murphy games are on my radar too, so you can still recommend other stuff as well

a game series i am thinking about getting is post mortem + still life 1+2, any opinions on that one?

FraterPerdurabo: Whereas Under A Killing Moon can be rather campy, Pandora Directive has a much more 'serious' tone. Highly recommended ++. It truly is a fantastic game, you cannot go wrong with PD. Truly a must-own for anyone on this forum.

Still Life was a satisfactory experience but doesn't really compare to the aforementioned. I don't recall much from Post Mortem (played it a long time ago), but I think I preferred it over Still Life.

Then you also have the Gabriel Knight series. I personally didn't like I so much (thus disagreeing with pretty much everyone here). I played II and found it an ok, but occasionally frustrating experience (granted, I'm not too far yet but I don't really see it changing much). I.e. you can be stuck in a huge world with no leads whatsoever because you missed something silly on screen #29.

But honestly, if you haven't played Pandora Directive yet you need to get your ass off of the forums and to your wallet to buy and thus play this masterpiece.
Follow up with UAKM and then Overseer for ensured maximum satisfaction.
How can you plat PD before playing UAKM? UAKM set the stage for PD, mostly with Tex’s love life, or want to be love life.

I also played and fully enjoyed the Polices Quest series. Has a nice mix of regular cop work and a murder mystery.

You can because it really doesn't matter. The entire love thing was a quite silly in UAKM and like I said, PD has a much more serious tone. Sylvia is only mentioned in a handful of references within the game (picture on the table, first dialogue with Chelsee, etc). It really doesn't factor in the game as much as it does in UAKM and Overseer. Oh and I played PD first and when I played the others, I felt that the entire thing was explained to a sufficient degree in that game.
With the Zork sale going on, this is a good time to mention Suspect, Witness, and Deadline. They're pure text, and you have to lose many times to learn what you need to win them, but they're crime-solving detective games played straight.
Dracula 3: Path of the Dragon is a very well done game, featuring investigations. Out of all the modern Dracula based adventure games (including the previous installments in this series,), it's the only one that rises above mediocrity, with some great writing and a more than two dimensional main character.

Also all the Sherlock Holmes games by Frogwares are worth the time; Jack the Ripper, and The Awakened (which is a Sherlock Holmes game with Lovecraftian elements!) in particular, are both excellent, and welcomely dark.
Reminds me that Infocom did a Sherlock text adventure toward the end, too.

The one that the alimighty mobygames doesn't list, heh.
Amongst more modern IF, there's 1893: A World’s Fair Mystery http://www.illuminatedlantern.com/?page_id=106
http://www.mobygames.com/game/sherlock-the-riddle-of-the-crown-jewels

There's also the Nick Bounty series:

And a well-made Flash game called Detective Grimoire on various Flash portals.

Discworld Noir is a detective story.

The Last Express has a lot of crime solving elements even though it's not, strictly speaking, a detective story.

There's at least one Murder on the Orient Express adaptation available.

Also quite a few crime themed Flash adventures from Pastel Games.

i looked a bit into it, and it looks like mystery of the persian carpet isnt really a part of the series despite being made by frogware and being included in the steam sherlock holmes collection - any insight into that?

It is made by Frogware, but while technically part of their Sherlock Holmes series, it's a completely different sort of game. It's more of a casual game really. It eliminates the first person, fully explorable environments and puts more emphasis on simple puzzle solving.
It's not bad by any means, and has a decent story. I wouldn't buy it on it's own but if it comes in the pack it's no harm done.
ok so far i just want to thank you all guys, i think my list goes as follows:

- Post Mortem + Still Life 1 and 2 (bought them)
- Gabriel Knight 1-3 (already have them on GOG and once started to play the first one, brilliant atmosphere and writing so far, but something came in the way)
- The Last Express (got it as a gift from a friend who owed me something)
- Sherlock Holmes Collection from Frogware (as soon as i am sure i have enough money left this month)

stuff i put on my future to buy list:
- Police Quest 1-4
- the Tex Murphy stuff

stuff i want to have a closer look at and maybe buy them too some time in the future:
- Casebook series
- The Art of Murder Series
- CSI Games
- Darkness Within

oh, and dont be shy, you can sill recommend stuff, or try to convince me to put a game onto my list that was already recommended
