Elmofongo: Hey I read the premise of the story and it was interesting, but sadly I could not find it in the DC website so I rented the movie.........it was bad.
The acting was chessy, the characters had poor character developments, the climactic fight in the end was bullshit, some sub plots were just glanced over, and generally rushed moments.
Please tell me the graphic novel is not like the movie because the premise of the story is too good to be ruined by a shitty movie.
DodoGeo: Worst move possible, the movie is horrible, just garbage. Get the comicbook if you can.
First of the main character was moddeled after Sting, so a blond, cocky englishman. How the hell they casted Neo for the role is beyond anyone. He isn't even a hero, he's a neutral character, sort of a trickster who screws over both Heaven and Hell. Even the storyline they took for the movie was done so much better in the comics.
edit: Just saw the bolded part, by the description I was thinking you saw Constantine by the description.
A History of Violence is a damn solid movie, don't know what you usually like to watch but this really isn't a bad movie and most people agree on that.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399146/?ref_=sr_1 How was the comic book version of a history of violance?
Anyway the acting just felt cheesy, for example the scene with the buglary of the cafe, the 2 robbers were making too big of a commotion, talking too loud and screaming angrily, a real robber would do it quitely and get the money as fast as they can without attracting too much attention from everyone outside so no cops will come.
Oh and the sex scenes made me cringe, I could forgive the first one with the wife dressing in a cheerleader outfit (even though it was corny as hell for me) the second one was just awkward, the second one was just awkward, it just cam out of nowhere that I thought he was gonna rape her but no some, "Argh I am angry at you, but I love baby, ok I forgive you, lets have sex" moment.
Speaking of which the reaction of the wife finding out her husband was actually a member of a mafia gang just felt rushed, like after she finds out she immediatly hates even though they have been married with each other for decades obviously, and the man could have asked he is sorry for lying to her, but no she's pissed at him for lying, as if she completely forgotten her long relationship with him.
The dialogue is stupid sometimes, no real person would words like this movie's dialoge.
This is just one scene from the beginning of the film where the family was comforting their most one dimentional daughter ever.
Daughter: May I leave the lamp turned on?
Mother: "I think thats a brilliante solution"
A normal person would say: "I think thats a good idea." or "ok/alright" This one might sound nitpicky, but there are a lot of other examples to quote.
The final fight in the film with richie was bullshit, the part where his henchmen was garroting Joey but fucks up misarbly, while Richie pulls out a gun and tries to shoot him but fails, perhaps its because he was shooting him from the hip instead of aiming his gun and Joey was at point blank range, to quote Richie himself," How do you fuck that up!?"
Finally the plot holes, like the one where what to the other plot points in the film, like the son beating up his bully, but after that incident it was never mentioned again, and the cop that was obviously accusing Tom that he might be the real Joey, but we do not see that plot point again.
Man this is going on long enough, this movie is a piece of shit that I am surprised that every critic is giving it positive reviews, and perhaps its because the premise of the story is good and I liked the premise a lot when I read it in wikipedia, but the execution of the story was horrible just horrible.
So I end by asking, does the comic book fix all the problems I have written?
