I forgot to mention a fantastic vegetarian restaurant called Vanilla Black just off Chancery Lane. Even if you're not a vege, it's worth a visit. However, it is expensive (on average £35 - £40pp). It's the only place in London that I wouldn't resent paying it IF my finances allowed

serpantino: Good point but surely all android GPS apps will also use data traffic. Is your phone contract/locked to one carrier? I bought an American HTC phone years back that was android and used a British mobile company.

Wishbone: No, why would they? GPS is not facilitated by a data network, it's a satellite signal. Several satellite signals rather, containing a synchronised timestamp, which are picked up by the GPS unit (in this case the phone). From the difference in timestamps between the different signals, the GPS unit calculates the relative difference in the distance to each satellite, and from this it can calculate its precise location in relation to those satellites.

And no, my phone is not locked to one carrier, but I'm not buying a new phone subscription for another country when I'll only be there for a week ;-)
My mistake, I apologise. I was tired and not thinking straight, I forgot that Google Maps streams from the net hence the data requirement, I usually save the maps offline in advance to get around that. The only free GPS app that I'm aware of for Android is MapDroyd but I've never tried it.

Also a sim card costs on average £1 here for a pay as you go one. It might be worth looking into just for the sake of convenience. Some offer rolling data plans as well such as Asda Mobile (Asda is a supermarket chain owned by Walmart.). The sim cards themselves can be found in any asda store and usually cost £1 and once activated you can top up £10 and then text 10 to 2732 (free) and you'll get unlimited texts, 100 minutes talk time and 100mb of data for 30 days. No contract is required but any call time/data left over expires 30 days. I don't know what other companies supply as I'm with Asda Mobile and I top up like that when I'm travelling.

Wishbone: Additionally, can anyone recommend an Android app for a tourist in London? Basically what I'm after is just a decent map with GPS functionality. Free is best, but a small price is also fine.
Google maps does have an option that says "make available offline", though I have no idea how well it works. As for "tourist" applications, try GuidePal City Guides, it downloads the guides you choose so they're available offline, and can then use the GPS and camera for an "augmented reality" display... as well as show plain lists of restaurants, tourist attractions, and other points of interest, and it has maps.
I'm coming in October for a few days with my GF. I already read the recommendations about places to visit, but could you recommend any cheap but nice hotels/motels/hostels that wouldn't be too far from the central area (preferably walking distance, though if it's further away but there's a bus stop closeby then that's okay too)? The option of online booking would be nice. Also, any genuine old-timey looking pubs? I'd love to have a pint in a pub that looks like it belongs in Tarant (that's from Arcanum for the 7% of you who don't know)

SirPrimalform: Your friend sounds like a massive racist...

Licurg: Well, half a dozen pakistanis jumped him in the street for no reason....
If he had that racist attitude before, I can hardly blame them...

PDF of the London Underground and Publictransport system might be quite helpful.
And Google Maps Offline Mode work pretty well, test in Denmark though, otherwise your in for some nasty suprises.

Given that I came back from London a month ago, that's kind of redundant now, but thanks anyway ;-)

I did end up using Google Maps offline mode. Worked like a charm, although I gave up using the GPS function there. Still, just having the map available made it easy enough to find our way around.
My questions are still on the table, if any native would like to help! :}

SirPrimalform: Not cool, but you can't make sweeping generalisations based on that.
That's very cute, in which bubble do you live, mr politically correct liberal?

You can't downrep him for saying things like that, especially after what happened to his friend

Maybe when you get mugged and robbed by a pack of darkskinned dogs your mind will change a bit, I humbly welcome you to go to a black neighborhood here and when you get stabbed and robbed, you are welcome to say how you can't "Generalize" people
Or let's not go there after all...

I didn't downrep him for anything, I just called him out on it.

And since you're being openly racist, I'll call you out on it too: Fuck you, racist!
In every large city there are areas were you better not go walking in the night. London is surely no exception. You can ask the police which areas that would be (suburbs probably).

And of course these areas are inhabited by the poor and of course certain ethnics tend to be more poor than others. With a bit of goodwill you could see the initial post of Licurg just as a result of bad wording. He meant to warn from going to dangerous areas in London which coincide with areas where dominantly pakistanis live. It might just be bad wording and in no way meant as debasement of any pakistani in particular except the gang who attacked his friend. But then the borders to real racism are always very small with such statements. Some people might not make the difference and that would be bad.

Also it might even not be true, but I don't know.

SpikedCereal on the other hand is just openly racist. When someone refers to people as subhuman due to their skin colour then it's kind of hard to excuse...

Good to know, I'd not come across him before.

He's not even a fun troll like JCD-bionicman or Roman5. I love to hate those guys!
