This is not news. There was at least 2 threads discussing it last year.

+1 for the irony! :))))
Well I don't believe GOG have retracted what was said there and since GOG is having a huge sale of its own which they started by making a game free for 48 hours and have had discounts up to 85% and have previously had pay what you want discounts it is hard not to notice a certain discrepancy between their words and actions.

Not really. These things are still rare on GOG compared to Steam. And virtually all of the discounts that were above 50% were on bundles, not on individual products like Steam does.

I think things have definitely changed, and TET said something to that affect (iirc), suggesting that they did indeed have to go where the market led them, and that was big bundle sales. (Not every week of course, but this summer sale has been pretty big.)
I agree in general as having sales has made me less willing to pick up stuff unless I am fairly certain I will like it and will play it right then. Though on the flip side, I will have pre-ordered more games this year than in the last 5+ combined.

Also the summer sale seems to be going well for GOG.

I still remember someone complaining about the price of the Unreal series the last time they were on sale. Something like, "On Steam you can pay 10$ to get five games, while on GOG, you only get 2 games with the same amount of money". So, I guess GOG hasn't transformed to Steam yet on the sales matter.
I think deep price cuts get people to buy games they normally never would have, which is basically free money for developers and publishers. The art of it is timing, when to do those deep cuts so that the original price or between prices are not something you can wait through if you really want the game.

For example I wanted Tomb Raider but hadn't saved up the cash for it yet. They suddenly a month or so after launch it was $25. I would have paid $50 for it if they waited a little longer. Similar things happened with Hitman Absolution and Crysis 3.

In the end though most games are not worth $60 so the faster they come down a bit the better. And the $2 sales really are just for people who never would have purchased otherwise. Why do I own the Sonic games for example? I have no idea... I got them all for $10 in a bundle, $10 Sega never would have had otherwise.

I agree with you up to a point - there are certainly some games that I would not have bought if a sale hadn't brought them below my "Eh, why not" price point (usually <$5). On the other hand, there are definitely other games that I would buy at full price here if there were no other option, but I don't because I know if I'm patient it'll go on sale.

In spite of that, I'm inclined to think that I probably have spent more money here overall thanks to sales than I would have purchasing individual games at full price.
Yes, we have been here before. And as we know, we can rest assure that GoG will never compromise their principles just to make money :)

(which I do not blame them for, by the way)

Even with GOG offering more discounts this year than last, posts saying "I'm not buying X here, I can get it cheaper on Steam!" still happen fairly regularly. So even with the changes, they haven't reached that point regularly yet.

Though I don't check what Steam puts up for discounts, so maybe they are closer now than they seem. The only places I check whats on sale regularly is here and Xbox Live.
