xyem: I'm going to change the title of my giveaway to
'Xyem's Weekly Hoe Giveaway'
which will take it up to ~52 a year.
Can I have a hoe? I need to get on with my gardening...
avatar
GameRager: I'm glad someone corrected Xyem's crap englishe. ;)
avatar
gameon: hoe is actually a word, lol.
I know.....it was just the wrong spelling Xyem used when writing his reply, is all.

GameRager: All in all, what we're trying to say is that no......a veil of civility is alright to ask of us, if done in moderation. Censor/redact/etc f**k/s**t/etc to your heart's content, but know when to edit and when editing would be too extreme a measure. That's all we ask. :bows:
I do. On the other hand, you don't agree with me. Thus why we're here discussing it. ;)
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: The link stands unchanged. I think you're clever enough to figure it out, Xyem. :P
And how long until you change the URL too because you realise it will show up like this in Google:

GOG.com kicks gluteus maximus‎ - General discussion - Forum - - GOG.com
www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gogcom_kicks_ass

It's not just me, bub. ;) :points to growing crowd:

(Well, to be fair, it was Judas that made the call and not you...so you're off the hook, I guess....for now. -_-)

I've already explained: changing the links is a hell of a hassle. I'm attempting to encourage people to avoid putting profanity in their topics by simply changing the text that shows up in the forum directory and asking nicely that they refrain in the future.

This is censorship in the same manner that requiring someone have a computer to play a game is DRM.

You can't take my computer away after I buy it.
DRM can take a game away after I buy it.
You can take my original wording away after I post it.

So no.. it is not in the same manner.

Still if it still shows up in search results(the original urls) then why even bother changing the titles to create this "veil of civility" to bring people here if they'll be able to see through it from moment 1 by hovering over the link/reading the search results more closely?

Also as others said, there's a big difference between legitimate usage of risque words and swears/profanity. No one minds(and many appreciate) when you and others edit actual swearing out. This wasn't swearing though.

With our luck they'll all probably be loaded with integrated graphics and celeron processors.

trying to create a culture where it do not happen in the first place. The less it is shown visably in the list of topics, the less likely it is for someone else to do it also. This do make sense, people do not browse forums by url-links (normally)

hedwards: I think he's concerned that we'll hit the 1 per year limit before they even get around to releasing LSL or Softporn Adventure.

Remember we only get one a year, so we shouldn't be wasting it on something as banal as ass.
You're RIGHT! We must must must must must remember to use it on something that'll be remembered. First we must choose the appropriate word......maybe something foreign sounding to draw the global crowd in.(Anyone know any brazilian swears?) Then we have to figure out the best way to display our creation to the world. I vote for 50 foot tall, poo shaped billboards with the GOG.com logo next to the thread title, which will be in giant blinking/flashing neon lights.

Yes but wanting to encourage people to not post such in titles but allow such in thread posts? Why allow one and discourage the other in such a way if not for a totally different reason(Such as getting new customers to come to GOG.) than just encouraging board civility?

Either way it won't accomplish much. If thread titles are being edited to lure people to GOG OR being edited to keep people on GOG once they get here it won't matter once they start reading the threads in earnest. Thus doing such(editing thread titles) by itself(regardless of reason) makes no sense to me. The only way this could become a valid strategy(for either reason) is if they also implemented a wordfilter for forum posts and/or a set of forum rules against swears/etc.

Don't give me ideas.

Big billboard. A certain shock-image with a shoe edited into it (both the image and the shocking part). Huge GOG.com logo and the phrase:
GOG.com kicks gluteus maximus

I wonder how much that would cost..

EDIT: Oh, and a QR code that brings people to this thread.

Well of course you'd need to get the rights to use that image(And knowing the creator that's likely to cost you a BUTTLOAD...;)..).

gameon: Thats a really good call gamerager. The thread title moderation is superficial at best, and changes nothing.
If TeT didn't make this policy I propose we write a petition to GOG staff to have it changed to allow usage of certain words in titles if they're used in civil/valid ways....like damn/hell/ass/etc.
