BoxOfSnoo: I have never ever met someone who uses Mac because it's "cool".
Every person I know that owns an Apple device has one because it is the "in" thing. And I know this because I've asked them why they chose that and it is always "everyone has one". I know it is obviously not a universal thing, but I don't personally know of any exceptions.

avatar
BoxOfSnoo: I AM here though. Evidently I've been here longer than you have... I'm sure I've been using Linux longer than you have too. But when I game, I game on Mac, not Linux. The experience is significantly better for me. I know only too well how to "apt-add-repository 'http://transient.hacker.geocities.com/distro' && apt-get install libfoobar-2.x libpy-needle-nardle-noo-++" and then tweak for 15 minutes before a game will run. I kinda prefer drag & click these days. Does that make me "cooler"? There were still well over a thousand votes for Mac versions of games, so don't pretend that people already here don't care about Mac.
No, that doesn't make you "cooler" and I'm not pretending anything. The numbers are right there..

I didn't say there weren't any, I'm saying that the numbers say there are 4.5 times as many people here wanting Linux. I'm also saying that it is a little odd that ~1300 people get a years worth of development time when ~7000 people can't get few commands run (if GOG gave me permission I'd have tar.gz's ready for upload by tomorrow), even though it would have also benefited those ~1300 people.

The cost/payoff for what they have done seems to be extremely unfavourable.
Spend a year making ~1300 people happier.. or spend a week making ~8,300 people happier. It's a no-brainer to me.

Truck: Ok, I'm gonna ask the ... bad questions (: SO: ppc versions? (: (No, really, 90% of my osX machines are PPC.) Sure, dosbox, but I meant the NON-DOSBOX ones. I already did the Dosbox ones on the mac, cuz, you know. Dosbox (: If we already own these, how do we get the osX versions? Just leech away on the page, and say "Yes gimme the dmg" or do I need to do some other trickery? What VERSION of osX does it need? Snow Leper and above, or can they run on the non-sucky versions like Leopard? (And Tiger? Tiger would be nice. They're bouncy flouncy fun fun fun fun fun! Unlike, say, Snow Lepers. They're not bouncy or fun.) And now: Thanks. This is a step in the right direction. Next, of course, I'd really like to have Linux, but you KNEW that was coming (: I can wait til you're ready (:
If you want to run dos games on tiger, use the ppc version (Boxer v0.87)...

Humbug, PowerPC will make you go blind! A Motorola is all the computer a real man needs. Maybe an Apple Language Card too, if you like wearing stockings on the weekends. Ain't nothing wrong with a bit of stockings, long as you keep it to yourself SOLDIER!
Wow, I never thought this would happen. Great news for Mac enthusiast's like oddly, me. Awesome.

You get the OSX versions just by clicking on the game and you should see two tabs one with a windows symbol and one with a Apple one,. Kinda like this: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g169/Evilmonkey6669/mac.png just click the Apple one and you get the Apple OS X installer as for OS it just says MAC OS X version 10.6.8 or newer so

Oy. I should have known someone was going to ask this. Apart from the DOSBox-based games, I don't know of any effective modern solution for running x86/Windows apps on PPC. I remember there was an effort to wed Bochs, an x86 emulator, to Darwine, but I don't know what's happened to it. VirtualPC on Mac PPC is long gone, with Connectix bought up by Microsoft years ago. Sorry, but it's time to upgrade...(look at the bright side, the rumored 13" Retina MacBook Pro is supposed to be coming soon!)

Anyway, it goes without saying that you need 10.6.8 minimum, and an Intel Mac.

Huh? Snow Leopard is the best version of OS X Apple has out there. Better than Lion at any rate.

Here, here! I still can't believe they removed "save as..." in Lion (and didn't bother to return it in Mountain Lion.)

DCT: Also the Marathon games would be nice to see, granted I don't have a MAC but it would still be cool to see

Miaghstir: They certainly would, but if you're prepared to do a little bit of work, you can get them now, through the official open-source engine Aleph One and the game data which has also been released for free. Edit: you don't even need to do any extra work, it seems they've nicely packaged each of the games together with the engine in a zip file, so you can just extract and play.
Nice, have to give it a go then as my only experience with the series were the original PC port of Maraton 2

ninjafoodstuff: Some things: Can we have a Mac games filter, both on the front page and in the games library? Surprised there's no Gabriel Knight or Ultima VII Mac versions, even though they both run perfectly well on Mac (in Boxer and Exult, respectively)
They've got one - under the browse games section you can now narrow results by system and MacOS is one of the choices.

Apparently they have returned it sort of ... I'm still on Snow Leopard

I wonder if Snow Leopard is the minimum to eliminate any PPC confusion (since it's the first x86-only version) rather than due to actual technical limitations?

Nice! Thank you very much. I just grabbed all three of them.

Thank you GOG for supporting the Mac now! Yes!!! I am so happy to see that some of the games I already own are "Mac ready" now. That rocks. I'll be checking the list of 50 after I post this to see what else is cool.

Thanks so much too for the Witcher 2 on the Mac. I already owned the windows version but now I can play it on my Mac instead and you didn't charge me anything for that. I love you guys!

It's a great day! :D

rampancy: I can see what you mean, but these games have been only playable on OS X in a strictly unofficial and unsupported capacity, either through WINE, VMs, or DOSBox and community/open source ports, through roundabout shenanigans and trickery with the installer files. In terms of official support, this is the first time that these games have really been available on OS X.
avatar
Malignant_Manor: GOG is still only using vanilla Dosbox/Boxer for Dos games (Windows games likely use WINE/commercial WINE if not officially ported). There is no real software side support.
Actually some of the configuring they do does help (not always as some forumers will offer better config files for DOSBox games) - but GOG are also responsible if I have trouble running a game, they now offer troubleshooting and support to get working for me. They can't guarantee its success, but the help is there. They are officially selling and supporting games that work on the Mac.

Also the Witcher 1 wine port works better than previous attempts - CDPR changed game files/engine to get it working. Now GOG won't be able do that for almost all games - they'll have to use standard WINE tools and tricks - and I'll be shocked if we see WINE games on the Mac anytime soon officially sold and supported here. But if they do, don't underestimate the importance of selling GOG/CDPR WINE ports even if not many tricks were needed to get them working (although again in the Witcher 1 case they clearly did do some small amount of work on the game itself to get out the graphical glitches and other bugs that would crop up in WINE ports).

There were a lot of under the hood changes that took place in Snow Leopard from Leopard and it is a very common break in compatibility. I also suspect your right that part of that has to do with no longer supporting the PPC.

The games library is where it would really count though, as there is no way to tell which games are supported without clicking on the cover art first.

Oh hey, they did … sort of. That is frightening and I had better remember to never use it or I may lose hours of work.

Ah right yes, our personal game library itself could use a filter, good point
