Birthday fun and gifts (for you!)
GOG.com 5th birthday celebration continues, and we came up with some fun activities essential to every nerd party in the universe. Namely, we want to play some trivia with you! There will be prizes, of course, because there have to be gifts in a birthday celebration. Since it is our party, you get to keep the gifts! We wouldn't have it any other way. But, just to make it more fun, you'll have to put some effort into getting them. For the next couple of days (let's say: until Sunday), we'll post a daily activity for you. A quiz, a puzzle, some trivia--you know: fun stuff. Each day you'll get a chance to prove your gaming knowledge and familiarity with GOG.com for a chance to get some free games. Our activity of choice today: word search!

UPDATE:
We got word from our support, that some users aren't sure where they should send the answers. Let's pretend that finding the e-mail address on the picture below is a little warm-up exercise before the actual word search. If you can't handle that task, there's probably not much point in wasting your time looking for the 40 titles. And one more thing: we didn't notice it ourselves, but there's actually 41 hidden titles in the picture (apart from the highlighted "FEZ"). That's because one of the longer ones contains another one, shorter. Still--we don't expect more than 40, and that gives you a bit of an advantage.

GOG.com Birthday Word Search

You've got time until Thursday, September 26, at 14:59PM GMT. That's 24 hours. Have fun! :-)

Thanks to GOG for the giveaway contest, great idea.

I got 29 but gave up due to dwindling time to sleep before work.
I was stuck at 39 then went to bed...after 6 hours of sleep I think I finally managed to find the last one, or to be exact, I had already found it before I went to bed, but I wasn't sure if it would count. I just hope I'm not too late!
With FEZ, hit 40. Hopefully its counted.

Braussie: I also wondered if TET made the wordsearch, as I found "TET" in the cross section of "FEZ"... lol...

avatar
Psyringe: I'd expect GOG to accept both though.
avatar
Braussie: That's what I think as well. We shall see :) I looked for 20+ minutes til I saw the one I just mentioned.
avatar
TheTrveFenris: Found the 40 games, plus Fez and the extra one (the one-inside-another game). Total: 42 games.
Oh, and also poop.
Keep searchin'!
avatar
Braussie: I laughed when I saw poop.
Poop messed me up so much. Eventually I couldn't find anything because poop kept jumping out at me!
avatar
AzagTh0th: I found 43 game words (included FEZ)
I really hope I can win.
I found 42 (including FEZ).
Damn, I'm tired -.-

Well I found 40, no overlaps. Submitted and we shall see if it was right. :)
Wow, It was a bit tiring indeed. I'd have gone for a more classic Crosswords approach. I bet that a decent programmer could come up with a quick algorithm to OCR to table and identify matches with the titles in the catalog.

nitrom: First step: Getting a list of games on GOG: easy.
Next step: Generate data structures for each reading direction of the search box.
Next step: Program a brute force search.
Next step: ???
Last step: profit!

Pretty simple to do that, if I did not miss anything. The worst part is probably step 2, but even typing it all would not take that long. Doable, tho I dont know whether it the invested time is really worth a 9.99$ game. And I doubt that anyone could have done the whole thing faster than the quickest manual searchers...

drfears: Actually, the hard part for me was the first step. Specifically, getting a USABLE list of games on GOG. Lots of games have subtitles or supertitles (e.g. this isn't in the wordsearch, but "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" could appear as "SANDSOFTIME"). I found 38 titles once I had worked the kinks out of my quick python script. The other 4 I had to do some manual searching for.

It wasn't faster than the quickest manual searchers, or even some of the slower ones, but it was a much more enjoyable method for me! And I wrote it while I was waiting for a work-related program to run on my other machine.

Now to send it in...

Fears

P.S. If anyone wants the program or any of the supporting files (game list, word search table), PM me and I'll send them after the deadline.
Christ...decided to give it another shot and now I'm stuck at 39 (and one of them is even the word within word one, so I guess I'm at 38....) No idea where the last one could be :P

edit: Found it....And to think it even was the closest one to the example word :P I wonder if I have patience to find the 41st game, you know, the one that's not Arma

Only 37 including FEZ :(

Even that their is more 5.99$ games I would like to own my pride as Dr. Brain player will forever be hurt :D
A nice contest, I like puzzles and riddles :-)

But I fear it's way too late now for the race part. Anyway, I only found 40 including FEZ and one in another... don't know, if that counts. So, I'm in for the draw.

Besides, I found CIA: oooh, ohhhh...
Uffff, found the last one. Did I win something? ;)

Ha, I hold my hands up and admit I did exactly this soon after the announcement. OCR'ed the puzzle, copied it into a 2D array and ran a search algorithm for each orientation in the puzzle.

Rest assured, I haven't entered, don't intend to and won't be passing on the results to anyone. I was simply stuck on 30-something, wanted to see where the others were and enjoy any excuse to get a programming exercise under my belt.

Good luck everyone!

CrowTRobo: I love word search puzzles! I really wish I had a printer right now.
...or a girlfriend with a printer.

Anyway, I sent 12 hours ago 40 games, including the abreviation.

I dind't find any "game" within a "game", though.

I found poop, both forwards AND backwards.
