I am relatively new to GOG and am encouraged by the DRM free service that accompanies older games. However, I would like to propose a simple idea that may or may not come to fruition. Valve has held a monopoly on PC gaming sales with the exception of "EA PC exclusives", but monopolies are almost never beneficial, and I for one am tired of having to log-in to Steam to play a singleplayer only game. With this in mind I would like to propose a GOG Steam Merger program. This entails:
A. Purchase of games through Steam would also give you a code on GOG to utilize the game in a DRM free mode
i. This would encourage traffic to GOG.com and as a by product increase awareness of the site and its numerous deals.
ii. This would increase user relation with GOG, already positive, and as a consequence decrease it with Steam
Problems- This could potentially cut revenue sources for GOG if the were to hand out copies of games unnecessarily.
Answer- In my unsupported opinion, very few consumers purchase the same games through both services and would in fact increase profits on GOG by spreading awareness of the deals offered here.
But How?
Many site based services have spawned around the game DOTA; these services gather data from the Steam database and reliably show the items you have and allow you to trade for them. My hope is that a similar process could occur in the games industry. While a bit more complex than one dollar items games are stored in a similar database and could be accessed in a similar manner.
English is not my first language, so if you see any mistakes please feel free to comment with the correction, please cite the phrase. If you have a supporting or opposing view please let it be heard, this is not a debate; rather, it is a discussion that may or may not amount to anything.
