If the game gets a decent promotion, I'd purchase and play in a GoG tournament ;)
GoG sells FIFA? :p
Or are you talking about VR SOCCER '96? Go get us a nice promotion and maybe we can accumulate enough players? *winks and teases*

Ubivis: (...)the main problem will be, that we will never get all players online at the same time(...)
Any ideas for this issue?
I doubt that you're ever going to get everybody on-line at the same time, but you won't have to. As long as you get enough people to play (critical mass), you can always set up different times and play in groups. Any ideas for this issue?
A problem I see as far worse would be getting everybody to own the same GoG.
I wouldn't dish out 10$ just to play a few games and I'm not sure how many others would, so either a very popular game or a game on a great promotion would likely help the cause (if it's on promotion, we might even find people to gift a copy or two).
Translating this in possible actions, we likely want to gather a list of multi-player GoG games and of people interested in the idea, where every poster provides a list of obtained titles, how much s/he would be willing to spend on what sort of game, what time-frame (including time zone) s/he's able to participate (with regards to specific days) and where s/he's located (to consider jitter on the connection).

So have more of a league set up with points for wins and draws (only if people want that kind of thing, free for all multi-player would be good to set up to) .

Fujek: Just looked it up. According to GoG: 'Although the game successfully establishes a network connection and launches a multiplayer game, after some time the connection breaks, which results in shutting down the network game. This problem is caused by the game itself, and is considered by the developer as a “known issue”, without a solution yet.'
Aaargh! That's bad. Although I have OW retail version and my MP there works (I played it a few times), the chances that enough GOGers have retail too are quite low.Fujek

kazmar: UT (the classic again never really had a chance to play in mp when it came out, could do team matches and classic death matches)
since it seems that UT99 would be the favourite for most, how would you rate our chance to get an UT99 GoG Olympics special promo discount of about 50-75% at GoG? ;) Maybe you could email them and generate some sort of interest?
I'd guess that it would make for a neat little 'news' article and might get some sale momentum.

I'd be up for this.
I'm sure there are plenty of UK folks to have people for any games(events) chosen.
Question is... can we get enough other teams involved?

Floydinizer: oh you mean national teams? i guess, maybe we could make some mishmash teams with pretend countries for people who want to join but aren't enough to make a one nationality team
Aren't we all citizens of The Great Empire of Internet? ... although, I wonder who its emperor would be. Maybe it should be named "The True Democratic Nation of Internet" as it's ruled equally by all citizens... although that'd be rather similar to chaos, as well as not being entirely true yet. Hmm...

National teams would be kind of difficult, I think. Varying numbers of participants and all that, and then there's stuff like the Finnish team couldn't beat the Swedish team in anything. It'd also end up in a big nationalist brawl on the streets of internet.
If there's a need for static teams (which would mean commitment and all that, everything's so difficult!), I'd prefer other kinds of teams like "League of Little Ponies" or "Deadly Battleship Kittywitty" which a set number of people could join or something. Then there'd be a need for sub teams for different games and all that.
My ultimate preferred choice would be kinda lax rules, fluid teams, and more of a fun than competition mind set. Competition stuff easily turns into pointing fingers. It also causes terrible, terrible damage to everyone somehow. I'm sure of it, trust me, I'm a doctor (not really).

Well, wouldn't it be great to play every game with MP support? I mean, HoMM is a great choice for TBS, but there's also JA2 [with 1.13] which offers a different approach to tactical gameplay.
Of course, not everyone should be forced into every genre, or even every game in the genre.
Also, not only DMs should be taken under consideration, but also coop. Hence, a one on one, a free for all, a 4v4 etc would be different competitions, even for one game, HoMM for example.
It creates a lot of mess on the first look, as there would be a lot of competitions involving every game with MP and it's genre, but i think it's worth it.
I myself, wouldn't take part, as i'm with the "i don't play with people i don't know" party.
[edit]
Also, any ideas on solving the national disparities? I mean, North American GOGers have the ability to create specific teams, consisting of people who play one game, but very well, while GOGers from Isle of Man, Faroe Islands, Macedonia [yeah, Angel], or Poland, would have to go with what they have, ending up with disproportions of XCOMical levels. ;)

Teams would be good I think (makes it more olympics like).
We can make up places though (places based on games perhaps?) and then we can get a certain number of people in each team (depending on how many people are available in total).
Then, you can have team or single-player events, and a total of medals for each "country".
Non-geographic teams would actually work better, since the "events" would be at varying times of day.
