A rhapsody in red.

Hotline Miami, a cronenbergian psychedelic action-thriller asking some serious questions via twisted storytelling, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for the next 24 hours!

Here's a question: how much violence is too much violence? Here's another: if you act on someone's orders, are you still responsible for your actions? And another: if you have free will, does that mean you can willingly give it up? For a seemingly uncomplicated game, Hotline Miami can really make one ponder upon things that people usually avoid thinking about. Surprisingly, it achieves that without forcing any conclusions down your throat, without lengthy dialogs, without any pretension. It just--well--shows you stuff. Red pixels, mainly. Lots of red pixels.

Find out why Hotline Miami became the indie smash-hit of 2012. Experience the fast-paced frantic combat sequences spliced with stealth elements and careful tactical planning. Take a plunge into the psychedelic and mind-bending narrative that will leave you uneasy, with a head full of questions. Open up to the exceptional soundtrack that makes up for the large portion o this game's hypnotic appeal. Take a trip back to the trippy, pixelated 1980!

Hide your face behind a mask of your choosing and find out how disturbingly easy it is to end a game character's life in Hotline Miami, for only $4.99, until Thursday, January 17, at 10:59AM GMT.
One of the worst games of 2012...

wormholewizards: Buy it, the game seems much more stable after the latest patch.

spoderman: I don't know about that, the patch actually caused my friend more issues lol. Game is in desperate need for more updates, but I did enjoy it. Has some bugs and AMD driver issues that need to be worked out. I had to downgrade my drivers to play it with less graphical glitches (no idea if those were fixed in the last patch).
Plus, it is super spotty on Windows 8. I still have not been able to complete the game playing on Windows 8 due to crashing, though I've heard those playing with Windows 7 and below have much better luck...

Lovely game, if you can stand the super meat boy-esque high speed cycle of dying and learning. I enjoyed it a lot.

Blasphemy :)

Make no mistake this game is a mess! Its ugly, awkward, buggy, inconsistent, and at times very uncomfortable but man, I LOVE IT!! Someone gifted me this a week or so after I joined GoG and I will be eternally gratefull to the giver as well as the entire GoG forum for inviting me in and making me feel so at home and welcome though I never did anything to deserve it.

Obviously it's not for everyone, but if you grew up in the 80's, you own a copy of "Faces of Death" on DVD, you ever watched "Resevoir Dogs" while stoned, you ever watched "2001" while sober, or all of the above, I highly recommend you take advantage of this offer.

Shadowcat: All I know about this game is that RPS wrote a lengthy article about it in which seemingly every third word was "fuck" for some reason...
avatar
Licurg: Why is that a bad thing? :P
Because English is very poor at swearing. I always miss that when I speak in it.

I found SMB to be way harder so I gave up on it after a while. It took me a little more than a week to beat Hotline Miami. Sure, I died at least 50 times on most chapters but something kept me going. I still have to unlock some masks and weapons, and get the secret ending though.
I played with a Xbox 360 controller and something that bothered me was that the auto-lock feature always locked on the enemy that I didn't want it to lock so that accounts for most of my deaths. Hit detection is also very buggy, you can't hit enemies right in front of you most of the time. It works both ways, so I used it in my favor to defeat the final boss.

So true! Resevoir Dogs was my first 'burn & watch experience, haha. Good times...

But yeah Hotline Miami rocks. It's buggy as sin but the game just has that special... something. Maybe it's the badass soundtrack or breakneck pace.
I don't think this game is "that" gory. I mean it's gory but in unrealistic way, the same reason why i can stand gore-fest horror movie but absolutely can't stand watching the real thing (medical, surgery documentary etc.).

Well said. It's gory but it's definitly 'cartoonish'. Some people may gripe that the graphics are so dated but I think that is one of the things that helps the outlandish violence and blood seem almost comical. Something like Blood or even the Kain series are way more graphic than this. Thats not to bemoan one over the other; I love all of those games.
Hm, I was waiting for this deal during the Holiday sales, but now that it's finally here I'm reluctant to bite. Some seem to love it, some seem to think it's lame and pretentious. And I really can't say which faction I'm more likely to join, just by looking at the screenshots and gameplay footage. I've already regretted buying a few indie games last year, that received much praise but turned out to be quite mediocre. A shame there is no demo available.

What are the chances of this game being featured in an indie bundle during the next year or so?

Did you like Postal? It's similar only ten times faster and it's more of an aracde setup; run in, complete the level, well die 50 times and then complete the level, and onto the next. In that regard it kind of reminds me of the old Lode Runner once I learned to give myself infinite lives.

Novotnus: ...and so the day came.
Yeah finally! Today I'm a lucky and happy man.
