The final frontier is 40% closer today!

FTL: Faster Than Light, the starship managerial roguelike-like sim that will make you feel like a Starfleet captain, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com. That's 40% off for the next 24 hours.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a tough game. Some would say that at times it's unfair. To that any spacecraft captain would promptly reply: "life isn't fair, crewman! Suck it up. Now zip-up that red uniform of yours and go check the contamination levels in the second airlock". They would be quite right. Life in the depths of space has no place for such concepts of fairness. You need to be prepared for solar winds blowing in your face. You need to expect to be suddenly boarded by alien pirates. You need to have a backup backup backup reactor core. That's just every day's reality for a starship commander. Although, hard as it may seem, you get to reroute power to the shields and launch photon torpedoes at stuff, so in the end it's way more satisfying than all other careers you could have.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a meticulous simulation of a spaceship commander's duties. The fate of the ship and its crew lies in your hands, so your performance has to be flawless. You have to track many of the craft's systems at once, issue orders to your men, and plan at least five steps ahead. The galaxy you'll be traversing is procedurally generated and full of danger, so the game provides infinite replayability and challenge. If you are a sci-fi fan and you enjoy difficult games, FTL: Faster Than Light will mesmerize you with its setting and unforgiving mechanics.

Boldly go, where several men have gone before and got their butts kicked by aliens! Grab FTL: Faster Than Light, for only $5.99!

jackalKnight: Does it run okay on Intel HD Graphics? My laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card...
As long as you have at least 1280x720 screen res. It can run at less, but all the lovely pixel art will be downscaled so it'll look a bit crappy.
There is an element of luck, but I can say that I get to the final boss the majority of the time now. The tough learning curve is part of what makes it fun.

The other thing that is great is that the game only takes like 1 and a half to 2 hours tops. Easy to pick up and lay down.

fortune_p_dawg: With roguelikes the random element is always there. But through multiple deaths you'll improve your understanding of what certain things do (triggers, enemies, traps, potions, etc) and thus evolve your fight or flight mechanism accordingly. So, you'll still die, just a bit less.

haydenaurion: Yeah, it's just that from what I gathered in reviews that FTL seems more luck based than other rougelikes. Hmmmmm, i'll have to think on getting FTL, but thanks for the response.
This game was well worth the $9 I paid at launch. $6 is a steal! Anyone into space games should absolutely pick this up! The gameplay has been polished straight through. The devs definately had a lot of passion for what they were doing.

Easy Mode is worth playing a few times as there's some bad ship designs that won't end you until the last leg of the journey, so it's a good way to learn before taking a the game on the way it was intended.

imAgi: Linux users should goto the developers site, you get all 3 native clients (Linux, Mac, Win) DRM free for the same $5.99 price.
Well observed, so there is no need to run the game through WINE.

Also the sale on the developers site will last until the 10th of december.

So if you miss the sale here, you still have a second chance.

And soundtrack?
Is FTL a lot similar to Weird Worlds? If yes, I´m content with the WW only (which is at https://indiegamestand.com/)

No, FTL very different. And better :)

Ah, so it's not recommended to play it on a netbook (1024x600)? Too bad ... :(

AFAIK, it will work but it won't be as pretty as it should be. Upscaling pixel art is bad enough (this is why I play it centered, not stretched), but downscaling would be a lot worse for me. YMMV though, perhaps someone who plays it on a netbook might offer an opinion?
wow. looks like this has shot to number 1 best seller (for the time being).

I thought EVERYONE (except me) already had this game.

makes me happy to think that the devs are being rewarded some more for making what I am told is a good game.

I have both and like both, though FTL hits a sweet spot with me that WW doesn't. I guess it's because FTL seems to have taken a route few games have.

Best to watch gameplay videos of each as both take wildly different approaches to combat and exploration. They share a few mechanics, but that's it.

If controlling a group of ships is more your thing than I'd say WW, but if you'd rather micromanage a single ship and its crew go for FTL.

Downscaling will only work if your graphics card supports a certain OpenGL version or extension. It didn't work on my laptop with an old intel i945 graphics chip, though I only tried on Windows for now.

Unfortunately no soundtrack, just the game. :(

Since i am running Linux, my only option was to buy from the developer's site and forfeit the goodies.

I wouldn't play it on one. You lose a lot of important information such as how much scrap you have, can't reroute power, etc. due to the fact that the game doesn't scale to fit the native resolution. And the loading times are horrible on my netbook :D.

Thanks! I guess in that case I'll pass for now, I still have enough other good games to play on my desktop PC, both causal/rogue-like and more involving. But don't worry, I'm sure I will try it one day, and the money I save on it right now will definitely go to GOG either way, at the latest when the holiday sale begins. :D
