The final frontier is 40% closer today!

FTL: Faster Than Light, the starship managerial roguelike-like sim that will make you feel like a Starfleet captain, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com. That's 40% off for the next 24 hours.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a tough game. Some would say that at times it's unfair. To that any spacecraft captain would promptly reply: "life isn't fair, crewman! Suck it up. Now zip-up that red uniform of yours and go check the contamination levels in the second airlock". They would be quite right. Life in the depths of space has no place for such concepts of fairness. You need to be prepared for solar winds blowing in your face. You need to expect to be suddenly boarded by alien pirates. You need to have a backup backup backup reactor core. That's just every day's reality for a starship commander. Although, hard as it may seem, you get to reroute power to the shields and launch photon torpedoes at stuff, so in the end it's way more satisfying than all other careers you could have.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a meticulous simulation of a spaceship commander's duties. The fate of the ship and its crew lies in your hands, so your performance has to be flawless. You have to track many of the craft's systems at once, issue orders to your men, and plan at least five steps ahead. The galaxy you'll be traversing is procedurally generated and full of danger, so the game provides infinite replayability and challenge. If you are a sci-fi fan and you enjoy difficult games, FTL: Faster Than Light will mesmerize you with its setting and unforgiving mechanics.

Boldly go, where several men have gone before and got their butts kicked by aliens! Grab FTL: Faster Than Light, for only $5.99!
How I missed seeing this page here, I don't know, but was on Slickdeals trying to get ideas for buying Christmas gifts, and saw this in the trending area.

Needless to say, I got an idea for myself, put the gift buying on hold, and pulled the trigger on this one.
Gah, I was unsure about getting this game for the longest time, but given the sale price and everyone saying it's good, I can't resist "pulling the buy trigger". On my way to the purchase page now, I hope you guys are happy and I hope I like this game.

Edit: I don't know, the short length and repetitive gameplay have me hesitant now.

I love this game. The best game I've played recently, bar none. It is fun, definitely challenging at first, but unlocking the different ships and playing with different strategies is way fun. I highly, highly recommend this game.
This is one of the most solid indie titles I have ever played. It's not "good by indie standards", it is seriously a good game. One of the few indies that I would recommend even at full price.
This is a great game and everyone should buy it. Go. Now.

EDIT: Gonna throw in a bit of self-promotion here: A while ago I did a short roleplaying let's play of the game. It's still pictures, so it might not capture the gameplay very well, but it should give you an idea of the flow of the game. It can be found here.

I watched TB's video on this game about a week ago and thought it looked nice.

However between Indie Royale, Bundle in a Box, and the upcoming holiday sale, I don't think I can go for the game at this time.

I'll still think it over though.
Already got it. It's a really good game if you like punishing (but also rewarding) gameplay. As a person who also enjoyed The Binding of Isaac a whole lot (by the way, you should really get the remake for GOG when it comes out; the one programmed on a proper, non-Flash, non-performance-destroying engine), I think I qualify. The randomness of FTL allows for great replay value, but you really need to figure some of the tricks out if you want to have any shot at surviving. Anyway, I'd recommend it.
I knew that this game will be on sale sooner or later! :)
Linux users should goto the developers site, you get all 3 native clients (Linux, Mac, Win) DRM free for the same $5.99 price.

The beauty is in the short length and repetition. You start quick, you play quick, and you die quick... and you do just a little better each time, picking up nuances as you go.

But each play, even if you die after 15 minutes, is so varied it ends up feeling like its own mini-space opera.

I suppose that's not so bad, the only other thing that has me hesitant is how much the player's success seems to be based more on lucky randomness rather than skill.
its' now the fourth or fifth time that i am here reading the gamecard for FTL....maybe i should just buy it to NOT have to do this anymore .... still very very tempting ..... damn

With roguelikes the random element is always there. But through multiple deaths you'll improve your understanding of what certain things do (triggers, enemies, traps, potions, etc) and thus evolve your fight or flight mechanism accordingly. So, you'll still die, just a bit less.

Yeah, it's just that from what I gathered in reviews that FTL seems more luck based than other rougelikes. Hmmmmm, i'll have to think on getting FTL, but thanks for the response.
