rampancy: They may have worked before in CXG 10.x but I hadn't tried in a while...I tried pretty much every trick in the book, from fiddling around with sfall to installing them in a win98 bottle and everything in between, but I still had problems with extremely sluggish gameplay and mouse movement. In any case, thanks for letting me know!
Actually I had them installed in CXG 8, but who's counting? ;) I did have trouble with Fallout Tactics. Does that install properly in CrossOver 11? Also, has CrossOver and CrossOver Games been merged into one product now? That's what it looks like, unless I am missing something.

Fallout Tactics works perfectly under CX11; actually, it's worked well in fullscreen since CXG 10.x. Under Lion though, on my MacBook Pro and MacBook, Fallout Tactics (as well as other games) needs to be run with a virtual desktop enabled.

Oh yes, and they've decided to merge CX and CXG into one unified product, which sort of makes sense to me...

Smart move. Those cross ties or whatever seemed handy but were not compatible with both products. Hopefully this takes care of that.
A bit OT, but i wanted to ask this, despite Porting/Wine/DosBox, being pretty good alternatives to run GOG games on mac, is there a possibility to see mac games here in future?

I'm just curious to know how this works, do you (GOG) need to pay much more to game publisher/developer to have also the mac version, if they release mac version later? (as it usually happens)

I just saw Steam got the Witcher EE for mac as well, so people that already had the Windows version there, can now also have it for mac

Thanks and sorry if this has been asked before :)

Maybe one day in the future GOG will be able to sell Mac versions of games that have them - but GOG will indeed have to negotiate with IP holders to do so. Typically I would imagine GOG works on the agency model such that the IP holder sets the price and GOG gets a cut so that GOG does not pay to sell a particular product but negotiates its cut to be allowed to sell it.

The vast majority of the (non-DosBox/ScummVM/newer titles) catalog of classics GOG has may never see a Mac release since they never had one to begin with or it was for MacOS 9. That said if WINE ever gets really good enough (and it is getting better!) so that all games become relatively easy to get working, then that too may one day become a possibility. However, that will take a much longer time even beyond the technical and legal aspects as support would be a lot harder. DosBox/ScummVm games should work exactly as their Windows counterparts (so no real extra burden of support) and newer games with Mac versions should still be supported by the publishers/devs, but support for these in-between games would be all on GOG and would be significantly different & harder for GOG's port.

Marcin's comments in the video do give me hope that one day soon we'll see multi-platform releases for games with native/professionally ported Mac/Linux versions and The Witcher 1 may indeed be the first of such games if/when the Mac version comes to GOG! But sadly that day is not today. :) I imagine that if/when GOG does add the Mac/Linux versions of the games they have to the catalog, they'll want to do it when they feel comfortable about handling it and they'll make a big splash. :)

In the meantime, you can vote here to let them know you're interested:

Great post. I like to keep it simple. I use Bootcamp and Parallels 7 for all my GOG games.
Thanks crazy_dave :)

An exhaustive response, i really hope that day will come and GOG will grow, i really like what they offer and how they do it, hopefully they won't change too much as they get bigger.

Also voted, have all a nice day and keep playing :)

continuing TW1 discussion here since I don't want to post in that thread and our discussion is more relevant to this type of thread anyway :) - I was using the GOG TW1 version. I've not actually tried (nor do I have any intention of buying) the new Mac-version that CD Projekt Red released on Steam. I'm only using the linked thread (http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43407 ) as guidance that it is a form of Wineskin CDPR is using and that the game works perfectly.

The last variant of a WINE engine I used was 1.3.18 I think and I had to use WInetricks to install DirectX 9. The game mostly worked with exception of the occasional instability in the game and instability in the graphics. Most of the time there were just a few minor graphical bugs (toxicity bars never showing up, enemy health bars never showing up, etc ...). But the game was overall playable. There was also a problem that OS X and a couple Linux (but not all it seems) variations shared with not porting all the quests over into the save file. Hence I finished the game on Bootcamp. That was my last porting attempt and I haven't kept up with the WineHQ threads on it since.

A thread devoted to it has sprung up here:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/mac_version_of_the_whither_in_the_steam

So maybe that would be the best thread to take the conversation - especially since the OP has it. :)

This website is awesome. I've been using it for a while. Lots of delicious and good working wrappers!

Just used this for Fallout and it worked pretty well. The mouse seems to freak out a little when I'm using it for character movement, but it is still fun.

Thanks for posting :)

If you're using PaulTheTall's Wineskin-based wrappers, check to see if it uses a WINE engine which is WINE 1.4 and above. 1.4 fixed, for the most part, the galling mouse issues and speed problems which made this game practically unplayable. CrossOver 11 also works well too. Oh, and if you're on 10.7, you may need to set DirectDrawRenderer=gdi (either through Winetricks or regedit) to resolve issues with garbled graphics in fullscreen mode.

I'd also recommend installing the high-res patch by Mash, too.
Thanks for the reply. How do I check to see which WINE engine it is using? And as far as your other suggestions go, they sound nice, but I think they may be too technical for me. I've played around with WINE and could never really get it to work. That was why I was so excited about PaulTheTall's wrappers, I didn't have to muddle around with all the technical details.

Right-click/Control-click on the Application Wrapper for Fallout. There should be an option that says "Show Package Contents...". Select it, and you'll actually be delving right inside the wrapper's guts.

At the top level of the folder structure for the application wrapper there *should* be an application within called "Wineskin". Open it. This is the configuration app that should be bundled within all Wineskin-derive wrappers, that controls all of the workings and configuration details for WINE. Click on the "Advanced" tab and you should be brought to a configuration window that says the version of the WINE engine bundled in the wrapper and the version of the wrapper itself. If you click in the Options tab you'll be able to, among other things, launch regedit, winetricks and winecfg, in addition to changing/updating the version of WINE used in the wrapper.

That was why I was so excited about PaulTheTall's wrappers, I didn't have to muddle around with all the technical details.
And this is the reason why I recommend CrossOver for 90% of people who want to run GOG games (or Windows games in general) on OS X through WINE. Configuration and maintenance of compatibility environments is far, far, far easier and more straightforward in CrossOver compared to Wineskin.

I love Wineskin, and I use it just as much as I use CrossOver for games, but Wineskin isn't for people who want a streamlined, simple, "zero-config" solution for most Windows games out there. The tradeoff is that Wineskin is far, far more powerful for the technically savvy who don't mind spending tons of time tweaking and troubleshooting. However, for users who are fazed by more technically complex solutions, CrossOver is the better choice.
Bump. There have been some substantial changes made to Wineskin as of late, and I've updated my Wineskin tutorial accordingly. For people who want to download premade wrappers, they're available from both The Porting Team forums, and from PaulTheTall's website.
