It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Niggles: So will the existing downloader still be available and usable by those who want it and not the optional client?
avatar
Fallen_Zen: The Galaxy Client will be DRM-free just like the GOG Downloader is now. Also it will offer more options for you guys, like managing your games library right from the client. We do not want to support 2 optional clients, so the Downloader will go away after the Galaxy launches.
will it have a basic "classic GOG Downloader" mode option then?

Impaler26: That's bad news. I don't want to install a GOG client and would have preferred to continue using the old GOG Downloader. :(
What difference will it make? You use a downloader anyway...

Fallen_Zen: We want it as "light" and responsive as possible, we're making sure of that.
Will this program be 'portable'?
That is no installation, hundreds of registry entries and temp files - just click and run 'as in old times'?

EDIT: What other components will I have to have it on PC to run it? Java, .NET etc.?

It does make a difference if you will have to install a probably bloated client just for downloading your games. I'll just wait and see how things go...

I'm not seeing the difference... how do you know it's going to be "bloated". You're still using a downloader of sorts.

Tolya: If you don't want it, you don't have to use it at all ;) That is the point of the optional client. You can use GOG exactly like you do now ;)

Rusty_Gunn: So the GOG Downloader will continue to work then?

Reaper9988: It's unlikely I'll use the client but it's optional, and more options are always good.
avatar
Rusty_Gunn: but it sounds like the option to use the GOG Downloader may be removed though.
Yeah i just read on the other threat that this is the plan.
I hope they keep some sort of light weight downloader version around for the people that use it.

The client will add a few entries to the registry, to track what was installed with it and some general settings. It's not just a downloader anymore. We're trying to keep it a simple process.

All that effort and so many people are judging it already. When is the estimated release of the program?
Why not just wait with all the complaints until more information are provided and the Galaxy client is available? If it can fully replace the old GoG downloader, i.e. downloading and keeping the original installer but not automatically installing any games, then wouldn't it be fine? I imagine it will be very convenient to have the games library in the client instead of the web browser with some status information ("ready to download", "downloaded, ready to install", "installed and ready to start with one click", ...)

And as the GoG team said, it's fully optional. For directly downloading the bigger files from the website, any download manager will still do the job. They also have some kind of integrity check, haven't they?

You could just use a flatfile database and a config file for that, might also make it easier to port to Linux later on.

Yep, a "downloader" with lots of functions i don't need. But as i said, this is all speculation and it's too early to complain. So i'll just wait and see. :)

Question/Suggestion.
How about adding a registry key (with a checkbox during installation) about "Keep game updated", then use the GOGGAMEPACK registry entry to see if the game should be updated or not? So only one extra registry key for the updating, and should be easy to toggle updating for already installed games as well.

That's what has been hinted so far. But we clearly shouldn't take anything for granted.

And for the moment, even if the Golgaxy isn't a bad news at all in my opinion, I've had my fill of bad reactions so far.

That's great news.

Don't knock it til you try it! I teach my kids that every bloody day so you better fuckin listen! :P
If GOG makes the API public (and documented) then the community could make an ultra-lightweight Downloader. That way everybody gets what they want.
