Hey there GOG Team,
I recently bought a new video card and it came with a "free" game; Far Cry 2 to be exact.
It made me think about how feasible it would be if GOG could get their name out there even more if they worked with video card companies and bundled 2 or 3 codes for free games from GOG with the purchase of a video card.
Well, I know you could attach it to anything (i.e. Hard Drives, Mother Boards, etc.), but this may be a good way to get the word out even more.
It is just a thought! :o)
The thing is, they're relatively new, so not a lot of companies would want to partner with GOG (yet). Also, free games with graphics cards, mobos, etc. are there so you can try out the kickass graphics it's capable of. For example, I got some generic tactical shooter with my 8800GTX back in 2006. If it's to show off the graphics muscle, giving free old games wouldn't really do it justice.
The trouble is the vast majority of people who buy new video cards aren't interested in older games. They want the newest games to justify buying that shiny new card (or vice versa)!
Good points guys, I never even considered that aspect. I guess I would have rather gotten 2 or 3 GOG codes for DRM free games than Far Cry 2 with my $74.00 n9600gt.

What about bundling GOG promo codes with hard drives then? Games are usually being bundled with graphics cards. This could be something unique, since hard drives are seldom bundled with anything

It came with a cool anti-static wristband. I felt like I was part of something.

Dammit I never get anything cool with my Western Digital hard drives
Faithful, you got a free install of Securom!
Congratulations, you are effectively renting the game!
it's okay, I bought the game for $15.. not bad to rent a game five times and spend only $5.

Try the Seagates. I put two 500GB Barracudas, and voila.

While I'm not a fan of DRM and Securom is one of the worse what Far Cry 2 has does work. Any activiation (you have three) that you use is revoked when uninstalled. If you format or computer dies you can contact support to get it revoked. Meaning unlimited installs. You can have it installed on 3 different computers at once. It was much better than the bullshit I had to put up with on Crysis where I installed the game and had to find a no-cd crack because Crysis swore blind I had emulation software - which I didn't. Dad had the same problem.

And if they disband the activation call centre in 1-5 years what then? This is the DRM I hate most as it precludes being able to play the game in the future if the company goes under or shuts down call centres/servers due to financial reasons being unable to support the cost of them anymore. It was this exact same DRM on Spore which lead to a huge outcry against the game publically affecting sales (1 star reviews on amazon etc) and yet it was already pirated before it was released and with the copy protection removed the pirated version was more stable and forgiving of hardware (a lot of dvd rom/writer drives screwed up with securom versions too)... IIRC Spore still tops the 'charts' as most pirated game at release even with the strictest DRM available at the time to them. In fact it was this outcry that lead to Maxis/EA announcing that they were reverting to simple CD keys again for The Sims 3 when it is released (in June?) and keeping securom etc far away from it.
How would an old game show me how kickass my new video card is?
Edit: Haha, I just saw that Michael said what I said, with the exact same wording.

With the number of harddrives sold in the world it'd be a ruin, plus the fact that most users would never play the games. People who buy harddrives are not necessarily looking for games to go with them.
Also, GoG would have to pay the respective publisher / rights holder their share of each copy that is given away for free. Not something a young upstart service should be looking to do, that.

Hmm, that might explain why I got Arx Fatalis with my 6800GT. Really good showcase of technology that...
