Damnation: Okay, so both my main suspects turned out to be town... Great... Will have to reread the entire thread once or twice I think. On stuff that has happened today, however, there are two things. Vitek's post - he said he expected jefe to be Joe's lover simply because of the outburst that was five words long, and two of those words were identical? I'm probably just nitpicking here, but it's some what a far fetched conclusion to arrive at.
I felt it's similar to NotFrenchYet response in Game 8 where her mason partner was night-killed.

Robbeasy: @nmillar - because you seem always to be the hammerer of the group, it sort of negates all the 'Hammerer must be Mafia' theories! Or maybe you just use it to your advantage...;o)
It's for that very reason that we quite often wait an eternity for someone to hammer; I did leave it open for a few hours though, so if someone else had wanted to hammer or remove their vote, they could have.

I did think his posts were a bit scummy - he contradicted himself several times - I wouldn't have cast the vote if I didn't believe he was mafia.

jefequeso: Or, you could just believe I'm Mafia, but that's not going to get us anywhere.
Well, this line in conjunction with your unprovoked claim makes you seem rather scummy. Since this line seems designed solely to further WIFOM.

Wow... do you guys really think I would be this bad of a Mafia member?

I'm...kinda hurt :(
Before we get sidetracked with Jefe here, we really should look into the easily most interesting thing that has happened so far. I refer, of course, to the peculiarly quick lynch of itai.sharim.

I know I'm going to sound like the chairman of the Mount Itai Fan Club here, but I've been saying the whole time I thought he was asking exactly the right questions town should ask, that his logic was sound and that the case against him was so flimsy it was basically non-existent. Which turned out to be true. May I gloat now?

To reconstruct the case, let's first look at the development of votes for itai. I'll provide a commented rundown, but I encourage you to ignore the comments and read the posts themselves; for extra convenience, I give you also the post numbers. (Not links, though. You're not that lazy, are you?) The votes for itai came in two waves, the first one going thus:

* L-7: bazilisek (#196)
The first one to vote for him was me. If you remember, that was for his insistence on trying to guess future mafia night actions, which he later explained (#366) was common tactic in the real-life version of the game. I retracted this vote shortly afterwards (#227), as its only purpose was to tell itai to stop it.
* L-6: Vitek (#200)
For the same reasons. Note that this vote was not removed until the lynch. Vitek later confirmed his vote in #439.
* L-5: Orryyrro (#203)
Same reasons. Retracted the vote in #335.

The second wave comes much later, after the Damn-itai debate started.

* L-6: QuadrAlien (#341)
Quadr's vote carries an explanation that does not really explain much. Reads itai's reaction to Damnation's aggressive style as "panicked" and seems to believe he (itai) is in cahoots with nmillar.
* L-5: Damnation (#348)
Deep in his argument with itai now. Damnation's role was instrumental in getting itai lynched, so I'll discuss that in a bit more detail later. Note the whole wagon is clearly becoming a very viable one at this point, which makes this stage most important for detailed scrutiny.
* L-4: Robbeasy (#358)
His explanation is the typically Robbish "a small thing here and another small thing there", the strongest point being itai's inconsistency in posts #77 and #111; the general gist of it seems to be that I am definitely scum, but itai is scum too and we ought to lynch him and then me.
* L-3: jefequeso (#359)
Offers basically no reasoning of his own, just an "I agree with you guys", and even includes an "I really hate to jump on the bandwagon" line. Coming at the inherently scummy L-3 position to boot, this is such a textbook example of a scumtell it's hard to believe it actually could be a scumtell.
* L-2: Orryyrro (#368)
Does not bother to provide an explanation other than "he is definitely feeling very suspicious right now". Odd, and somewhat uncharacteristic of Orry.
* L-1: Rodzaju (#372)
It gets better: this vote carries no explanation whatsoever. None.

At this point, Rob unvotes to prevent a speedlynch, and Rodzaju claims (#374) his pushing itai to L-1 was because of a miscount. Which is sort of funny, considering the last votecount came only a few posts earlier (#361), after full five days of no votecount at all and lots and lots of voting (previous votecount was #216). On the other hand, unless I am mistaken, all such miscounts have turned out to be genuine on this site before, so it's probably true. This puts itai at L-2. In #434, jefequeso mysteriously unvotes itai to L-3, once again using a miscount as an excuse. I don't really know what to make of that. Escaping the wagon in panic? That feels too blatant, again.

* L-2: Robbeasy (#437)
A beautifully scummy line, this: "now we have a claim out of him I think theres no more real reason to prolong things". Apart from that, there's just some theorising on speedlynches, which I consider largely irrelevant, as speedlynches are hardly a concern on day one.
* L-1: JoeSapphire (#441)
The reason for this vote seems to be "I want this annoying day to be over already". Joe is confirmed town, anyway.
* L-0: nmillar (#454)
As Rob has already said, nmillar's enthusiasm for early 90s disco makes this action basically unreadable.

As I mentioned before, this wagon formed very quickly and there definitely was scum on it. Perhaps even two of them; three would probably be pushing it, though. So dig into the posts and make up your minds, everyone! Events of past days often get forgotten in games on this site, which is a terrible shame.

I also have a lot to say about Damnation's role in all this, but that will have to wait for another post, coming either fairly soon or much later today. We'll see.

Yes - I have to hold my hand up to some flawed thinking here. Let me explain...

I have spent most of today rereading day one, looking back through all the arguments and the Rod/Baz thing especially. One thing about it stands out to my mind.

Rod couldn't possibly have the info he clearly does have, if he were Mafia. It would be too strong a role, why would the MOD inform a Mafia player of the two Town Docs? It makes no sense. So - I have to conclude that Rod is Town.

By extension, that also makes Baz Town, as him and Rod basically confirmed each other during the day. This is where my flawed thinking started, linking Itai to Baz - rereading what I put down for suspecting Itai is almost embarrassing,..which I suppose it would be, seeing as he flipped town. I was still convinced he was scum right to the end, I DID want to give him a chance to explain early on, which is why I quickly got off him at L-1, but to be honest, he only made it worse for himself after that!. My 'beautifully scummy' line was simply an indication that his guilt to me was confirmed by then and further discussion was pointless - again, totally wrong, but its not like its the first time I've been wrong...;o)

As Baz said, there does seem to be a leaning in Mafia games on this forum to ignore previous days and forge onwards regardless - one of the reasons I read through again, armed with the new knowledge of Itai and Joe being confimed Town, and also with it fixed in my head that Rod was definite Town, and Baz as well.

More later as I am badly neglecting work in RL, but for now my main reads are :

Rod, Baz : Town
Damnation, Vitek : Scum
Everyone else : Undecided

Will explain reasonings after I've done some proper work in the real world!

umm, here's exactly what I said:

"I really hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I think that a lot of the evidence is pointing toward you, both from my own "feelings" (which I'm not going to know the validity of until we get some real facts about who's who) and other people's more logical reasoning. Even more than Vitek, you've been right in the center of just about every single debate thus far, posting paranoid and convoluted jabs along with the best of them. Trying to put suspicion on other people? Or just being an eager beaver?"

If you look back, I had previously said that I thought the Mafia would be the ones in the middle of conflicts, stirring up suspicion against other people. Itai was the one that I saw stirring up the most trouble. Good reasoning? In hindsite, I think we can all agree that it wasn't. In fact, toward the end (after Itai claimed Town Vanilla) I started doubting the validity of my own claims, which is why I unvoted him. But I don't think it's completely fair for you to imply that I just voted without any sort of explanation or reason given, because I DID give a reason. It just wasn't a good one.
Just a post to check in - I'm up to my ears in a proposal for work, game 8, and my poor NaNo novel. I was going to offer a breakdown of the votes on itai's wagon but baz beat me to it. x) Am following the thread, will post soon...

I'm going to say I pretty much agree with this. Rod, at least, is probably the most trustworthy source of information that we have at the moment since, as you said, it seems impossible that a Mafia would have that sort of information. That is, unless both he and Baz are pulling an incredibly elaborate scheme, which seems unlikely. By extension, of course, Baz is likely also trustworthy.

Rod, do you have anything that would be useful for us?

SirPrimalform: It's probably not a good idea to say this, but I might as well say it before someone else does. I think it's possible Joe was targeted in order to cast suspicion on me, as I had a vote on him for pretty much all of day one (it was an RVS vote and I wasn't actually around for most of the day and just forgot to remove it).
...? could you explain how that might be suspicious? I'm afraid I don't follow.

@Vitek - that's the conclusion I leapt to about Jef too, on the basis of that post. For future reference, Jef, you can drop a hint like this and leave it, and people will generally figure it out. It also means you have something to fend off mafia falseclaims with later in the game. :)

@Baz - who's getting sidetracked? >_> That was quite a relevent discussion about Jef, considering he claimed the lover partner of the NK. Maybe nervous because we were discussing another unprovoked softclaim?

Oops.

jefequeso: Oh :P

Oops.
;D I came *this* close to claiming on D2 in game 8. That's my first game ever. But I think your motives here were pretty sound (carbon copies of mine), even if the action wasn't necessarily the most tactical.

Then again, this is exactly why Rod's little Episode yesterday attracted so much attention...

jefequeso: Rod, do you have anything that would be useful for us?
At this point, I've said pretty much all that would be helpful at this point.
I have a list of 4 character names & the associated roles.
All of these roles have modifiers (or qualifiers if you prefer).
Baz is the only PLAYER name I have.
Why I should have his name is unknown to me.

I see my role as mainly "Roleclaim lie-detector".
I should stress that that is how I interpret the use of my information.
It is not what I am named in my PM.
I also think it is highly likely that the players concerned do not know about the modifiers to their roles, so I can help clarify some weirdness when it crops up.

I'm not saying it's irrelevant, it's just that I've seen way too many games here that foolishly ignored their own past, and want to actively prevent that from happening again. And yeah, nervous isn't perhaps the word I'd choose here, but I fully admit the number of claims floating around in this game makes me very uneasy. Which is somewhat hypocritical, I know.

Promised commentary on Damnation coming up! Brace yourself for a wall of text, lady and gentlemen.

Cool. That'll be helpful. We'll have to be sure to protect you during the night, however, since at this point I'd suspect that you're Mafia target #1.

I don't even know where to start, here...

I guess:

Rod and Baz: probably Town
Everyone else: no idea
