Well, i have been decided: it's my last purchase of Gog, i think it's a shame a downloader so poor, slow and so trouble...
This post exists for more than 3 years and nohing changed, and in a game that i purchased before (Darkstar On) i simply cannot end the download process, for the slow rate or by many problems, and after payd for the game i download in the web... =/
So, to pay for Gog and cannot even download my game i prefer get this in another place...
The last game i'm buying is "Capitalism 2", and that will take more than 1 hour, but the game size is only 81 MB, the gogdownloader is downloading at incredibly 20 kb/s... >:(
So, i have questioned the gog before but nothing change and i particularly like be respected as consumer...
Bye, bye Gog...

hey kid, have you see this post, from the begining?? 2008 man!!!! and TODAY (APRIL 2011) people have been experiencing problems!!! 3 years and still problems?? blah!!!
In torrent i go 100 kb/s happy, and without so many problem as Gog downloader shows, so, if you will not correct it, don't defend, because this entire post is made of user's solutions to pass by the problems the downloader STILL HAVE, the GOG could simply change the program, the plataform or whatever, but no, still use adobe air and bring pain to his consumers... i am tired of it, as i said before, and please don't say more foolishnes... THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR 3 YEARS OF PROBLEMS!

for sure your issue is not related to GOG.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR 3 YEARS OF PROBLEMS! If you not see any problem in GOG Downloader, man, you are blind, because this entire topic is about that... and please, if you are not of the Gog team and will only say that the Gog is perfect, stay quiet.
23 pages of whining in 2 years you call "BIG PROBLEMS!!!" ?

Anyway, the new GOG.com downloader is coming up.
I can see the downloader just fine; it says online/idle. But in trying to log in it just hangs there at "Please Wait". This last time, it's been up for an hour. (I've started/stopped/rebooted and finally just left it for an hour, but no go.)

When I check task manager, under networking, there's no throughput. When I look at processes, every once in a while CPU time is at 1% about 1 out of 3 seconds, otherwise 0. Memory usage keeps creeping up, so it thinks it's doing *something*, but whatever it is, it isn't downloading.

I have satellite internet. Due to bandwidth limitations, I need to download this between 11pm and 4am. (Already blown half that time rying to get this to go.) I can't download using my browser because the file is 2.2gb, and I couldn't get that in 5 hours. (Could get about 1.5gb...but outside of that time, if I go over 375mb in a 24 hour period, I get shut down to lower than dialup speed for a day.)

I live off grid, so I can't just set this thing up to run in the middle of the night and hope it goes, because generally at this time of night, all power is off here.

I'm running Win 7 Pro, 4gb of RAM, 1.6ghz i7 processor. I normally don't have problems with downloads. I downloaded games using the downloader just fine on my previous XP Pro laptop, but I'm getting no love bytes now.

This is a fresh install of both Adobe Air and the GOG downloader. I tried running as administrator, I added it to the allowed list in Windows Firewall...I'm lost.

Anyone have any ideas?

ETA: I even tried changing the priority to "Real Time" in task manager. It's just not doing anything but ever so slowly sucking up RAM.

Cady36: Anyone have any ideas?
Of course one would expect this thread to get updated, but that would be asking for too much, I suppose.

The current GOG downloader is crap, and I suggest you waste no more time trying to get it working, because it isn't worth the effort. If you want to download the games right now, you may have more luck with one of the two community made alternative downloaders:

XGOG Downloader
JGoG Downloader

However, there ought to be a new and hopefully much better official downloader coming relatively soon. The only official release date we have is "spring 2011", but it should probably not take much longer. So if you can wait, that is your best bet.

Awww. <Cries> Yeah, I can wait, I suppose. I've wanted to rebuy NWN for ages, so a bit more time won't kill me...I'm on vacation for my birthday and just wanted to mess around. (Though next time I get insomnia, I may try one of those other downloaders!)

Thanks for your answer! I guess this means I can go to bed now. ;)

spindown: I'm having a problem with the GOG downloader window being invisible. The downloader used to work for a while, but after some (possibly unrelated) problems with a corrupt download it's simply not showing the main window anymore.

Despite being invisible, the downloader is working, however. I can see its icon in the task bar when I start it, and when I add a download to the queue from the GOG website, it actually downloads the file. I can even see a little preview of the downloader's window when I hover over the task bar icon. It's like the downloader's window is permanently minimized with no way to restore/maximize it. So while the downloader is technically functional, I find this issue a bit annoying.

I am running Windows 7, 32 bit. I have removed the downloader and Adobe Air, rebooted and reinstalled both, but to no avail.
Same problem here. But I uninstalled both Adobe Air & the GoG DLer using Revo Uninstaller. Reinstalled both and now the DLer works great.

XGOG Downloader is/was discontinued (but it still works), so I suggest you try JGoGDownloader first.

Ermm quick question about the "new" GOG Downloader beta. The version number on the one currently for download is 0.9.0.1336 and the last version that I have installed is 0.9.30

What's the story? Slip up in the version numbering? Also, it doesn't seem like the "newer" version uses Adobe AIR (a good thing) and it maxed out my connection at around 2150 KB/s (also a good thing) but the .EXE file wasn't an installer like I was expecting.

So can I uninstall the crappy 0.9.30 version without affecting the new 0.9.0.1336? Can I uninstall AIR now too? Seriously guys, were are the release notes? Where is the changelog? Give us some information! You're just as bad as facebook with your lack of communication.

I think this a completely different piece of sotfware, and has its own version numbering sequence. Think of it as Downloader 2 beta 0.9.0.1336. The previous versioning sequence would have no reflection on this one.

I don't think it uses Air at all. I completely uninstalled Adobe Air [and the previous GOG.com Downloader tool] from my system and this new downloader app worked without a hiccup.

Curiously, the GOGDownloader.exe seems to be the entire program. I first ran it from a temp directory, punched in my GOG login details, and it just worked. Then I shut it down, copied the .exe to my C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\ directory, launched the program again and it already had my login details ready to go. It must store my email/password somewhere on my system. The GOGDownloader.exe file can seemingly be launched from anywhere.

I updated my C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\GOG.com\ with a shortcut to the new GOGDownloader.exe and everything seems to run just fine.

Yes and yes.

A readme.txt would be useful, but documentation is almost always the last thing to be done on software releases. You might just have to wait a little while. I'm not sure that we can't write our own readme.txt in this thread though. GOGDownloader.exe isn't a very complex program [well, maybe the threaded downloading is], and we should be able to work most of it out ourselves.

File locations:

New downloads are stored at:
C:\Users\[username]\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\[game title]\
eg. C:\Users\[username]\Documents\GOG.com Downloads\dragonsphere\setup_dragonsphere.exe

MD5 Hash check files for each game
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\[game title]\
eg. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\dragonsphere\setup_dragonsphere.exe.crc

GOG.com Downloader log file
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\
eg. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\output.log

GOG.com game title icons for download client
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\.data
eg. C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\GOGDownloader\.data\7886b948eefd817aad1ed2554922bb4d78ddadb4.jpg is for Dragonshpere and matches the icon filename used on the GOG.com website

I haven't yet worked out how to integrate my old GOG.com setup_gametitle.exe files into the new client without re-downloading them all. That's the next thing to figure out. I think I need to trick the GOG Download client a little.

With the new downloader, I got problem after I entered my email and password and I got the infamous "GOGDownloader has stopped working" window.

I got the same result on Win7 32bit and 64bit, and on two different machines.

If I cancel the login window I can click on the "Login" link ONCE (and same result), after if I cancel it again, I couldn't login anymore (I have to restart the Downloader).

My password has various characters, including :-=%+ and others like that... Maybe a problem here (and it is a quite long password).
Change your password to something much simpler [eg. briefer and/or alphanumeric only], and see if that fixes it. If it does, then you'll have found the source of the bug and should post about it here.

If it is because of your password, then testing and confirming it here will be the quickest way to get GOG.com to update the downloader so that you can go back to your normal password.
