StingingVelvet: Since when do companies base first-sale prices on ebay prices?
what does it matter that it's an Ebay price? i'm not talking about auctions. i'm talking about the going buy-it-now price from high-level professional Ebay sellers. i'm pretty sure you'll find the same prices on Amazon.

by the time all 3 Thief games are on GoG you'll be paying $30 total while you could easily get the entire collection for $10.

the same is true for the King's Quest and Space Quest series.

They do need collection prices, I made a thread about that myself.

I don't see why Deus Ex should be priced by the publisher any less than $10 though, and the fact there are ancient disc copies for less on reseller sites matters very little in that equation.

ancient? Deus Ex is one of the most frequently re-released games ever. a double-pack containing the original and Invisible War was released just before Human Revolution launched last year. and you can easily get this for around a tenner.

SimonG: I just hope Beach Life makes it here in time, not some shovelware like "Project Eden".
Actually Project Eden was very good. It seems very dull to begin with but it's surprisingly intelligent and well designed, and the more you play the better it gets. A real hidden gem.

Beach Life, on the other hand, is just decent IMO. I'd much rather have Startopia.

You do know that I was making a joke ;-). I thought Project Eden was brilliant and many people scorned it because they thought it was a shooter( which it isn't). And I never heard of Beach Life till I checked the page.

And I would love to see Startopia here! This is a GOG I would gladly play again.

Hehe, I do now. Good to know I'm not the only one who remembers that classic. :-)
Yeow! I appear to have ruffled some feathers here. I thought by my tone that people would take this with a grain of salt and not get defensive. I've been here since the beginning, and been a big supporter of the site.

First off with the price issue, I've bought these games twice already, once when they were new releases, then later on in collections. I'm not a pirate, I do support devs (even defunct ones!). I wasn't aware that publishers set the prices though, so it may not be Gog at all, which is nice to hear. But let's not go overboard about the "Gog experience". It's nice to have my games stored online, but I've had several games never run and tried contacting Gog multiple times without a response (after digging in forums). But for me, if I'm paying 2.99 for something, I can be meh about it and move on. Not for $10.

On the other point (that no one seemed to respond to), I realize businesses have to make money. What I don't like is when businesses change from what they do great initially to a crappy jack of all trades in the name of growth or what some stupid marketing person who knows jack about gaming says. Has Gog done this? No, and I'm hoping they don't. But there is a wee bit of writing on the wall and from what I've seen, no sir, I don't like it.

StingingVelvet: I paid $30 for a 50 year old movie not long ago. Quality is worth the price.
Just curious, what was the movie?
Both Deus Ex and Thief are worth 10$.

You make mistake comparing Digital sales to retail sales.

With retail sales of old games, after some time prices are reduced because they just want to sell all produced copies to get at least production price. Publisher already earned theirs, and now they just have to utilise what's left. And if they sell it very cheap, they just withdraw the production costs.

In case of digital sales, it's not the case, so you'll never see prices going that much down - it's just not worth to sell Deus Ex for 5$. But, we got promo sales every weekend, and big sales every Christmas. You don't have it here (maybe in USA it'sdifferent).

North by Northwest bluray book edition.

Awesome. I have the Masterpiece collection myself. Sadly, North by Northwest was not included in the set. I too am a firm believer of quality over quantity.

I'm a Cary Grant and Hitchcock super fan. I have the big set on DVD with the red felt, if that's what you mean. Also the Criterions. I looooooove Notorious.

I'm a big fan of Hitchcock also. I only have two of the criterions The 39 Steps and The Man Who Knew Too Much. I have yet to see Notorious so I'll take your word on how great it is. I might have to try and track it down.

This is true, your point is valid. Still, digital releases have a better price than physical copies most of the time when there are promos and nice deals. I bet you cant buy a physical copy of Deus Ex 3 for 10 dollars anywhere, yet Amazon had this price for the digital version on Christmas sale. The costs of getting a digital copy out is much lower than a physical one.

I dont know how many people here are like me, but i always prefer the physical copy over the digital one. Its just better to own the physical DVD with case, artwork and manual. Even though i prefer physical copies, i buy more digital games than physical for one reason: price. Digital copies just get too cheap on deals.

Now, when a physical copy is cheaper than the digital one, i wont even think twice. Its a no brainer. Just think about it, you can get the complete Thief series on a beautiful physical copy with case, artwork, manual, for 10 dollars, which is the price of the first Thief alone on GOG. For me, theres no reason to buy Thief on GOG other than to show my support.

Im not complaining or anything, i do know that this isnt GOGs fault, and Thief is definately worth 10 dollars, even more. But considering the circumstances, its overpriced.
