twaitsfan: Deus Ex and Thief are spectacular games. Perhaps in the top 10 of all time. But $10? Really? They're 15 years old and I can ebay them for $6. Weren't games 4.99 max at one time? Actually I remember Planescape:Torment being 8.99 I think.

And then there's the whole selling new games. I think in that press release there was multiple instances of 'growing the business'. For those lucky enough not to speak Corporate, that means selling your soul and doing whatever it takes to make money. I've worked for 7 software companies, now all soulless. I shiver when I hear those words.

Gog, I believe in you. Don't step on the ladybug of remaining faith that crawls in my heart.
Well, you buy a game if you like it and when you want to support the developer to make new games!, Making new games cost a lot of money and a lot of talent & creativity.
If you don't want to pay for it or less you are ignorant.

Actually, the developers of both Deus Ex and Thief don't exist any more and therefore wouldn't get any money anyway. Plus you make it sound like he's saying he's going to pirate it. :P

FraterPerdurabo: Someone wrote a song about this, you know?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xP_KFgZBQw

I am hatred, seeping blood.
The rain, the flood, the grief.
I am rage becoming flesh.
A dismal, ravaged life.
This is pain, a wall of tears.
And my tears are my truest friends.
This, my heart, a dying sun.
A flower fading to black.

Oh GOG, why have you forsaken me?

In this darkness, called my mind.
The waste you left for me.
I'm your shit, your verbal smut.
Your twisted world recapped.
This is you, your lifeless soul.
Your sick and fucked-up lies.
In my world your love is death.
Your disease, your skin that burns.

Oh GOG, why have you forsaken me?

You tied my limbs and buried me alive.
And piled this frozen mud.
You watched me die with lustrous eyes.
As all your words grew stale.
You mocked my care and stained my mind.
You yearned for me to fail.
+1 for some celtic frosted flakes.
Buy what you want here, buy what you can get cheaper elsewhere. Whatever. :P

SimonG: Well, Eidos does sell Deus ex cheaper at their DD store.. Thief is slightly more expensive though

Btw, that page is a good indicator for things to come here on GOG.
They're using GBP right? So, it's more expensive for me.

Snickersnack: Interesting. Is Thief 1 the Gold release on that compilation? It's been absent from the compilations I've seen in the past.
avatar
SimonG: It says so on the cover . Buying Thief Gold alone however, will put you back almost five times that amount ;-).

It's all a moot point for me anyway, as I have all three thieves, and I want em on GOG for "backup reasons".
That's a nice collection. I'd have to import it from the UK but it's still considerably cheaper than $30.

Thanks SimonG! :D
It should of course be noted that GOG's releases typically have compatibility fixes the others lack, so just because somewhere else is cheaper doesn't mean it's just as good.

But from what ive seen, GOGs version of Thief does have a few problems such as videos not running. Well, i havent tried it myself, bu ive seen people complaining about it on the Thiefs thread.
"Thou hath forsaken me, saith GOG, thou art gone backward; therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting." - Roman 5:0

GOG hast forsaken thee, for thou hath gone against Its wishes for too long. Prithee repent, and thou may still be saved.

I thnk most has been fixed by now. And GOG has uploaded a new build that should work (out of the box). The problem with PC gaming, you will never have enough test machines to cover everything. DK2 however ...

It costs me about that for a fast food meal which is consumed in maybe 5-10 minutes

It costs me more for a movie ticket to a movie that'll probably last an hour-and-a-half

Both of those games would give me more enjoyment AND take up way more of my time (joyfully, I might add) than the two examples I gave

You see where I'm going here? ;)

$10 base price for Thief and Deus Ex is perfectly reasonable. If that is too much wait for a sale, like I am on Deus Ex (because I own it on Steam). It's that simple.

I paid $30 for a 50 year old movie not long ago. Quality is worth the price.

that's not the point. Thief and Deus Ex may well be worth $40 even today.

the point is not to overpay for no reason. you can easily get the Thief Complete Collection as well as the Deux Ex 1&2 Collection for about $10 on Ebay (and probably elsewhere too) sealed and delivered.

the compatibility argument is overplayed. many games are W7 compatible out of the box. i know Deus Ex is. and as for the Thief games, you might as well just buy the retail edition (marked as XP/Vista compatible, so possibly fixed) and apply the fan patches, which are recommended even for the GoG edition.

at $5.99 many GoG games are an instabuy (for example, Syndicate). at $9.99 they aren't, at least not for me, and particularly not if i can get the game much cheaper in a different (physical) edition.

i'm just saying that GoG does not only have to compete with fellow digital distributors, but also with the still existing physical retail market.

Since when do companies base first-sale prices on ebay prices?
