Well in all fairness the point was to remove the CD check, strip that out and one crack is much the same as another. Its at least concievable that the gog team and... whoever it was cracker ended up with the same contents
Granted I don't know that much about programming at this stage but it seems to me that if my post was protected by the words "CD check" and a pirate and a legitimate business both removed them, the post would look identical

So a bunch of software pirates are mad because they think GoG stole their code?

You don't have to have an illegal copy to play the game without DRM, nor do you need the GOG version. OP on that forum is kind of an ass and suggests just because it uses a crack it's the "torrented version." You're buying a legitimate license that is precracked. There is a HUGE difference.
GOG rids of the DRM for you. Anyone who thought they obtained a "special" version of the game that was recompiled is a moron.

Warez groups crack games. It's not necessarily them who distributes the game. You could see it as they provide the tools for criminals to make their stolen games work, yes.
But the idea that GOG could use (or are using) the same tools seems quite "cheap" to me. I want to support game developers as much as the next guy here on GOG, and I will continue to do so, but I wouldn't mind if GOG/publishers wouldn't take these kinds of shortcuts to make their selling product, as it's still a business.

I seriously doubt that GOG "cracks" original games. Rather, the publishers give them a version that is DRM free, one way or another. That the publisher should take a shortcut via a publically available existing crack for their own product, rather than spending time and money developing one themselves, is not a farfetched idea. So much so that it's common knowledge that it has happened before. But GOG is hardly to blame for that.

This is a reasonable argument, but as long as the games work I don't mind it happening. They should credit those who cracked the games, though.

Of course I did, and just like most everything on Codex, it has a healthy dose of bullshit mixed with nerd rage. So GOG either removed the DRM or was provided with an executable that had the DRM removed. What are the odds that the removal of the DRM by GOG or the publisher might look exactly like a warez version that has had the DRM removed, only without the identifying headers? Pretty damn good actually. There are only so many ways the DRM could be removed in the first place. Until the GOG guys openly say they used the warez crack, it is nothing more then yet another pile of crap from Codex.

So Warez groups should be considered.... like sportsmen? Doing it just for the challenge?
This would only apply if they wouldn't publish their work (probably needed as "proof"). I can't break into a bank and claim that I didn't do anything wrong because I didn't stole anything and just wanted to beat their security, putting the blame on the guys following me to take on that opportunity.
Second point is, that (even if it was done so as mentioned) nobody knows WHO did it. So be careful where you're pointing with that finger at.
Last but not least: a lot of the "regulars" posting on codex have rather.... strange.... views on what's right and what not. Mostly they're just hilarious.

As stated, this might have come straight from Activision. It wouldn't be the first time that a publisher provided a crack to overcome a problem with a game, after all.

Aren't these the same guys that got pissed because abandonware sites removed games (specifically the M&M collection) from their sites after GOG started selling them? GOG didn't contact the sites at all, they made the decision on their own (and the correct one IMO).
