mushy101: Looking at the reception of Soul Reaver and Quest for Glory, plus the sheer post counts of each threads, that really isn't the case.
hedwards: Hmm, you do realize that QfG has a pretty massive following, right? I'm less familiar with Soul Rever, but it's silly to point to those two releases and say that it isn't something to worry about. You're already seeing it on days where there are no retro games released in lieu of newer games or independent games.
I still maintain that it was a bad idea to rebrand the site and lose focus on retro gaming. It may work, but I'm skeptical about how long it will work for.
I question how any of the hidden gems here could possibly compete with some of the newer games being released.
QFG was a series I never heard of until I saw it on here days ago. GoG has again (never heard of PS:T) informed of a hidden gem. A gem that garnered a lot of attention on the forums. Obviously we cannot tell exact sales figures for each game, but I clearly remember Soul Reaver sitting atop the charts for a good while. Not just a flash in the pan 2 hours, but quite a few days. Even longer then Alan Wake. Apart from Alan Wake and the discussion about RC3's price, the older games almost always get a higher post count in the threads and people usually buy them more. Yes, this is partly guesswork, but we only have the info presented to us to base my opinion off.
In fact, following the level of interest and sales chart, it's games like Soul reaver that made money for GoG much more then say, The whispered world. Even though the second is newer, more 'relevant' and garnered quite a bit of praise in reviews. Same for the recent Indie games, all good releases, but by far the community preferred the 'older' ones. The Whispered world didn't make much of a splash when it was released here. Apart from Legend of Grimrock, (maybe) the HOMM and AC bundle and AW none of the newer games really gained traction in both community discussion/buying interest and sales. I'd suspect Botanicula could've, but it was nipped in the bud by HIB.
You are quite right to be a skeptic, since this model of business is unproven and a unknown quantity in terms of success for us and GoG.
