This is indeed quite odd. According to the thread that SirPrimalform linked, the dev sent the request to GOG only last month. It would be very odd for GOG to reject a game on the basis that it's Indie (i.e. not classic), while releasing Indies (and other modern titles) at the same time. Also, Unepic has (to my knowledge) never been DRM-free so far, so releasing it DRM-free on GOG could have been a coup, and the author sounds like he was willing to remove the DRM (he's actually saying that a DRM-free version will be released later).
Very odd indeed. Some clarification from GOG would be welcome, until then I'll try to not jump to conclusions in either direction. ;)
