It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Sometimes I surf using a computer that requires IE6 due to special circumstances. And that alert that says "You're an idiot for using IE6! Please download one of these 4 good browsers!" is:

1) Not needed. I already know IE6 sucks.
2) Because IE6 sucks, it takes, in general, 2 or 3 minutes until I can successfully click on the X to close the thing.

I would recommend:

1) Removing altogether
or
2) Making it a pop-up.

Thank you.
Removing it altogether isn't going to happen. IE6 is pretty much just used by idiots and people using computers in a corporate setting. With the appropriate set up, you can use Firefox on computers going back to Win9x.

Changing it to a pop up, isn't something that I see anything wrong with personally.

And, does it really say that?
Even Microsoft thinks it sucks. http://ie6countdown.com/
The only PC I use that still has IE6 is at work, and I don't see them upgrading any time soon (damn them).

Lots of websites are interested in forcing people to upgrade their browsers, so that they aren't required to make their websites compatible with older versions.

That probably means they aren't likely to remove it. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to make it a popup though.
I disagree. It is needed. And it should be on every major page and be impossible to close it.

GameRager: So using IE 1.0 here is out of the question, I take it?

I'm guessing if I loaded this site in IE 1 a flag would pop out of my screen with the word BANG! in big red letters on it.
IE1 didn't support CSS for one thing. So you'd be completely unable to view the page properly. Much like as with any version of IE, really but more so.

As Microsoft says, friends don't let friends use IE6. GOG is just trying to be a good friend.

IE6 is such an antique that I even upgraded to ie8 in XP Mode. I wonder if it really says your an idiot. We should instead blame the other companies for being too lazy to make their websites web-standard compliant.

It politely says your an idiot.

I take it that you've never tried to write a website that runs well on IE6 and anything else. It's not easy to do because IE6 has such a poorly coded rendering engine backing it. But at this point the main reason why web developers are trying to force people off it is that it's a security nightmare and represents only about 10% of the total market anyways.

Online retailers in particular should be trying to cut off IE6 users as quickly as possible, just because of the possibility of the security problems with it.

You're right, I'm not a programmer, but I'm not sure what that has to do with anything I said...

From the rest of your reply you seem to agree with what I posted.

I wasn't so much disagreeing as pointing out that retaining compatibility for IE6 is not easy at all. The way I read it it sounded like this was a bunch of web developers being mean, whereas the more accurate interpretation is that it's not possible to retain support for IE6 without stifling the content for everybody else.
Hi. I'll try to give helpful answers.

Tallima: 1) Not needed. I already know IE6 sucks.
The real reason is to prepare you for the fact that gog.com isn't build to work properly on IE6. The fact that IE6 sucks is merely part of the reason that they don't bother to support it. The other reasons are that it is extremely expensive to support IE6 (in terms of labour), that the site would never work entirely right in IE6 anyway (because you can't get around the fact that it sucks) and that as far as I can tell hardly anyone goes here on IE6 so all that work would be for nothing. The warning is necessary so that anyone who happens to visit gog.com on IE6 blames any problems on the browser rather than the website.

Tallima: 2) Because IE6 sucks, it takes, in general, 2 or 3 minutes until I can successfully click on the X to close the thing.
That's actually a flaw in the script which makes the alert. The alert is added to the page when the page starts to load, but the ability to close the it seems to be added only when the page finishes loading. The ability to close the alert should be added when the alert is added.

I understand what you're saying, but instead of hoping that GOG makes the warning more bearable for you it might be worth just trying another browser. I realise that you need to have IE6 installed, but is there any particular reason that you can't install a non-IE browser? That way you still have IE6 for company intranet or whatever, but also have a decent browser for general web browsing. Even if your admin won't let you install anything, then you can use Google Chrome or the Portable Apps version of Firefox as those don't require install privileges.

I didn't mean for my post to imply that web developers were mean and lazy, just that maintaining IE6 support isn't worth their time (especially when there's a 12% global usage according to Microsoft, with the UK being at around 3.5%, which is most likely all government computers). Perhaps I could have phrased my post better..

No worries, when I reread what you had posted I was having a hard time remember why I came to that conclusion.

Well then. Upgrade or replace it.

If it's a network computer or somesuch, tell the owner to upgrade or replace it.

IE6 is not to be used anymore.
