Rohan15: Gmail.
Hotmail still receives penis enlargement spam mail. And I prefer Gmail anyways....
Gmail receives the same too.

Hotmail user here, loving it.
I have to agree that the spam block filter for gmail is not being overstated here. I may have gotten one or two junk emails since I got my gmail a few years ago, if that.
Hotmail: I can get your account details by pretending to be you and/or looking at your mail headers.

Gmail: I cannot do this.
Back in 1997 Hotmail was my very first e-mail account I used... before the dark times, before the Micro$oft Empire...

I no longer used it since 2002 or so... Nowadays I use Yahoo and Gmail. So, in a Gmail vs Hotmail debate, I have to answer: Gmail.
Lycos Mail seems to be pretty good about spam as well. I have only had two or three get passed my filter for as long as I have used the service. Im very careful about where I put my email out though, and that has a lot do do with not getting spam as far as I can tell. Gmail is nice, but it was a bit more bloated than I like when I tried it. Haven't used Hotmail since people were constantly making "Hot Male" jokes all of the time. I honestly didn't know it was still around. I haven't heard the name for a few years, so I always assumed MS just changed it to windows live mail or something like that. The fact that I haven't heard about it probably doesn't bode well. Then again, I am the only person I know that even seems to be aware that Lycos has free email accounts.

I've still got my circa 1997 email account, I keep it up mainly for e-peen. But, the service got a lot worse after mailcity was bought out by lycos. These days, it's OK, but not stellar.

+1 to gmail though.

I don't use mine much, but my lycos account is like 99.7% spam at this point. I'll have to log in and clean it out at some point.

well, I suppose that means that being careful about where you give out your email address is far more beneficial than spam filters.
When you guys said Lycos account, is it Eudoramail? 'Cause at one time I also had an account in Eudoramail.

No, Its just Lycos Mail. Now that I think about it though I remember hearing a wile back about it being shutdown in many parts of the world. It may not even be an option for the OP.

Well, it's an address that I've had for like 15 years, who knows how many times that address has been stolen from various databases.

I didn't get spam at all in my gmail account until TD Ameritrade was cracked. Needless to say I no longer do business with them.

Similar thing with my hotmail... Started getting some spam after Deviantart got effed.

Loving it, though. It connects my lappy, my phone, my online social stuff, all in one place.
I go with gmail. No spam, better UI. My Hotmail has been invaded by spam, though that might be my own fault as well, as it was my first e-mail addy back in the day, so you know how that goes.
Wow, how do you guys get so much spam in hotmail? I use both gmail and hotmail, and I literaly never get spam in either of them. No spam I didn't sign up for at least. Microsoft's filter works just perfectly. Is it really that bad for others?

Also, I kinda like hotmail's UI a bit better *runs and hides*. That's probably because I'm more used to working with it. But go with whatever feels best after five minutes of use. Creating and account is free, so just try 'em out for a bit.

Gmail for me. Hotmail got really fugly back in ~2005, as Gmail started.
Also, VERY nice inbox size for Gmail - >7.5GB.
It has a built-in chat (although I don't really use it).
Labels can be applied to emails (effectively sorting them into "folders")
Gmail is far and away better than Hotmail... and better than Yahoo, for that matter...

But email sucks compared to using a POP account and a client like Eudora back in the heady days of the Internet Gold Rush, and Yahoo's new updated Interface recalls those glorious days.

I love my Yahoo mail, but my professional address does end in @gmail.com
