Kakihara: It's even more fun to gift a game to someone who doesn't have that many games of the genre in his list. That way they get a completely new kind of gaming experience.

thank you for understanding
people keep misinterpreting this--i dont know why you would use this thread if all you are going to do is say "get me an rts, i like those." you can buy a damn rts on your own.

Well, to say "give me an RTS" isn't that good. but expressing genres you really like, and genres you dislike, makes sense.
You see, you want to hope that the person you are gifting enjoys the game. So if they express genres they really like, it's just as viable to give them a little-known gem within that genre.
And on the flipside, while there are some gamers who love all genres, there are those of us who are more picky. Myself, I find the concept of sports games to be lame (I don't like playing sports, I don't like watching sports so.. yeah), and racing games bore me. I tend to avoid FPS these days because they just kinda grow tiresome to me.
The way I see it, if someone expresses genre preferences, anything outside of the 'dislike' category is fair game, and anything within the 'like' category is gravy.
I don't want to start an argument in a trade thread but... You see someone has no RTS games in his list. You can deduce from that he does not like RTS or at least has little interest in the genre. He has probably played some RTS games and found he did not enjoy them. The point here is, you try to sway that persons preconceived notions of the genre by giving him a Good Old Game RTS which, if it really is a good old game, isn't lackluster and can be enjoyed by even someone who would previously oppose the genre. That way that person has a new experience and can, perhaps, even enjoy other RTS games.
Trying something new is basically the general idea.
Example, you say that racing games bore you. I'd give you Flatout. It's fun, pretty and has a lot of funny stuff besides the general idea of racing. I too did not enjoy racing games but that game really shows how you can't place most genres into a small 'cubicle'.

Not much info to go on, but I suppose I'll get you Descent 1 & 2.
I like most genres, but I'm not a big fan of point & click, but I'll try anything that is tossed at me, so to say.

What kinda game is that anyway? Looked at it a bit, and it seemed pretty unique.

Well the *proper* description is that it is a sim set in the 1400's but the actual game is like crack cocaine....

Woo-hoo!! I never played them back in the day, thanks a lot!
I'll see about getting you something. I'll go and see what you already have.
BJ
EDIT: I don't see Battle Chess in your collection. Once I get a bit more moolah (i.e. tomorrow), I'll send that one to you. I'm having a lot of fun with that.
Also, I am happy with whatever is thrown my way. Just to clarify from above.

Or perhaps a lack of titles in their list genuinely means they do not enjoy them. for example me with FPSs, I've played countless ones, including some of the ones generally considered to be the 'best'. So it's not "something new" for me, it is in fact, old hat. (My problem with FPSs is that I feel like I've played them all, even though I haven't. I don't see any grand differences between them that make it worth playing. I know that they aren't REALLY all the same, but that's how I feel about them.)
And on your example of giving me FlatOut, odds indicate you would be wasting your money as I would probably never even install it, because I have limited time to play video games, so I'm not going to devote that time to playing something I don't see myself enjoying.
And, if I got too many titles that fell in to my 'dislike' genres, I would stop participating in this thread.
It's kind of like cuisine.
If you hate broccoli, you're not going to want to try broccoli casserole, no matter how much someone insists it's good and "you don't taste the broccoli"
But, if you like broccoli, you may still dislike the casserole, because the broccoli is over cooked and smothered in cheese, but you're still likely to try it, and might like it.
Same goes with video games.
No matter how much someone ensures you game X is different from all the others in Y genre, it's still Y genre.
If you like Y genre, you'll give it a try, and you might find that game X is just a tired clone of *insert popular title for Y genre*, but you will still give it a try at least, and you might end up liking it.
Wow, this seems like a fun idea. I think I'll try it out.
Here's a list of games I've got on GOG:
Gothic 2 Gold Edition
Disciples 2 Gold
The Guild Gold
Games that are on GOG, but I've gotten from elsewhere:
Painkiller Gold
Fallout 1 & 2, Tactics
Arx Fatalis
Sacred Gold
Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Septerra Core
MDK 1 & 2
Duke 3D
Redneck Rampage
In Cold Blood
Broken Sword 2
I'm game if anyone else is
