carnival73: Apparently you then have to replay it some more to perfection to earn enough bling to purchase your army for the next stage and be able to keep most of that army alive for upgrading or selling for the level after that.
Yeah, there's that problem too. I actually shelved it and haven't been back. I wasn't interested in that level of challenge at that point. A strategy game like that is like a nearly opaque, but barely understandable puzzle game. Eventually, if you play it enough, you'll get it and be good at it. It's rare I want to play something that well, though, these days at any rate.

There's too much to try out. Same reason why I don't play MMO's or haven't bothered to sit down with the manual to X3. The games suck up too much time and dedication for just one game.

Good titles though if you're on a budget and not like me who wants to 'sample it all.'

Exactly, I think there's room for games like that and in days gone by I sucked all the juicy goodness from them like a spider devouring a horsefly. For myself I can't do that right now. I finally put down RDR even though I could have played multiplayer for months more, for just this reason. I have other things I want to play.
I actually heard that Fantasy Wars is easier than Elven Legacy. Is that not quite the case?

I never played Elven Legacy, all I can tell you is that Fantasy Wars is hard.

I'm under that impression as well but FW is an ass kicker by mission four if you've only scored bronze ranking in the first three missions.

It was like Ground Control II the other night. I was at the beach front mission and it took me four hours and six reloads to find the right approach and complete the mission but I won in a half-assed manner so comparing FW to GC II it would be like going back to that beach front mission and repeating until I got a gold scoring because the next mission is going to depend on that success.
Elven Legacy can be quite challenging, but I wouldn't call it 'incredibly hard.' Then again, I haven't finished it yet, so maybe it gets to that point later on.

Of course, no matter how difficult the game, you'll always have internet tough guys boasting about how it's too easy and how they're sick of everything being dumbed-down for four-year-olds.

Part of it is state of mind, when I played Castlevania: Lords of Shadow I cranked up the difficulty, but I found the "hard" rewarding, it feels a lot different if you don't feel like you're being punished for the whole exercise and that's largely in your head (though game design can definitely play into it). I'm sure there's a ton of people who'd tell me that LoS wasn't hard, but when you don't have 20 year old reflexes anymore, some of those games with very unforgiving fights get really tough.

I think that's the whole thing, once you get in your thirties you don't have the mental energy or patience you did back when you were thirteen. I mean back when I was thirteen I had Konami's Life Force mastered to the point where I had memorized all the bullet patterns throughout all of the levels.

Also as you near forty, you no longer have that notion that you've got an eternity left to take the time to master every game.

And, as well, here in 2011, considering what's available and the backlog, there are a gazillion more games avaiable now than there were back in the late eighties and early nineties.

Mentalepsy: So what's up with this one? Nobody seems to like it, but it looks like some decent mindless fun from the video. I mean, it's only a dollar.

lowyhong: I thought it wasn't half bad. Not going to be blowing any minds away here, but it's not a bad choice to whittle some time away. I've not finished the game yet though - I've played through half of the game twice, and always stopped playing at the same level. Real life seems to coincide whenever I reach that point.
I saw Alpha Prime a while back and told myself I'd buy it if it ever dropped in price so much.

Well, it's less than two bucks for me, so off I go. :D

How are the RIP games? $1.75 for the three is tempting, but...
I've played and enjoyed:

Alpha Prime - just $1.24, awesome deal!
Crysis - come on, it's Crysis!
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Best of the bunch IMO
Puzzle Kingdoms - very addicting
R.I.P. trilogy - Only $1.24. Can be fun, especially the third one, but has nothing on the Alien Shooter series
My recommendations are:

Alpha Prime - $1.24
Avencast - Rise of the Mage - $2.49
Ghost Master - $1.50 (seen it cheaper, but it is a nice little strategy game)
Mirrors Edge - $4.99 (Definitely worth the money, short but very sweet)

I think many people didn't like it because ofuneven and unreasonable difficulty, but it's been patched since then. Myself I played it on easy, and really enjoyed it. Loved the story - not exactly ambitious, but well done.
Nexagon Deathmatch - purchased and played it for about a half hour. From what I've seen, I don't think it's worth the regular ten dollars but the price for it right now is a good deal.

It's a deathmatch in various arenas controlled like an RTS but you can use your earnings from previous matches to upgrade your starting cage (to better protect your orb which is the main target for either party) and afford more units to bring into future matches.
Umm, if I get Batman AA from GG, does it use that games for windows live -thingie? If it does, is it mandatory?

Sorry to sound like a complete simpleton :)
