I had four wisdom teeth removed in England, years ago. I woke up and they'd done an excellent job. That afternoon, my mouth was a bit gory, and the skin around it a bit yellowed, presumably from iodine or some other antiseptic. I enjoyed flashing bloody smiles at my family, and obviously yawned more often than I needed to. They gave me a bottle of painkillers to take home. I don't remember what they were as I never needed to take them. I ate fish and chips and peas that evening, carefully, but with no real trouble.
I get the impression that my experience wasn't typical, but it could just be that those that had a rough time of it are more vocal.

Good luck! The operation's not bad at all and I was put to sleep for mine. It's really sore afterwards in recovery but make sure to clean the gums well as directed and that helps a lot. Make sure to use painkillers for a while afterward and you should be ok.
During recovery, distract yourself with lots of video games.

Good luck, sauvignon1.
EDIT: And no it's NOT a good idea to smoke afterwards.

I did that, the whole thing was over in a few minutes and everything was fine after two days.
Anyway, I was under local anasthetics and it was not that bad. Apart from some slight feelings in the beginning, there is no pain, it's just uncomfortable to see the dentist hammering with a chisel and leveraging some teeth out... I don't remember about painkillers afterwards, I possibly took some for the immediate days after, but no longer than necessary. There will be some dull pain for a while, and that's it. Except if you smoke or something, I suppose...

Upper wisdom teeth probably have usually more room to grow so they are more likely just pulled out.
Lower jaw can have less room so it might be your lower wisdom teeth don't have room to grow out, but grow to some other direction (even downwards, ie. the roots go deeper and deeper, which may become a problem for the nerves going in your lower jaw if the roots reach them). In my case the lower wisdom teeth were surgically cut into pieces and removed, they had been growing downwards.
I was happy when it was over, but I didn't feel it was that awful experience. I was happy to get rid of those little suckers.
I always thought I can keep at least the upper wisdom teeth clean (and I tried my best to do that), but I think they had still gone to a bad condition. Now keeping the rest of my teeth clean is all that easier, also the tooth gaps.

Good luck with the operation. Just remember: "wisdom is only possessed by the learned".

Advice: Cover your pillow with a towel before you sleep.
Also, enjoy tasting blood in everything for the next week or so after the extraction :)

I had 3 removed. Hopefully the other 1 won't come in.
1 was growing in, 2 were growing under the gums.
I did it without being knocked out. It was delightfully traumatic. :) It was a good character-building experience. Similar to being a father during child birth, but maybe to 1/5 of the degree.
I got a dry socket b/c I decided it was more important to eat a cheese burger than heal properly. Ibuprofen was my friend and I never needed the more potent stuff.
I still miss my one tooth -- 11 years after. I have a big hole that never fully filled in and piece of my gums that sticks out. But if a tooth doesn't have a biting surface, it will decay and rot and help adjacent teeth decay and rot. So it's best to get them out if you don't have the room or if they don't have a biting surface (I had the room, just not the biting surfaces).
If you get knocked out, it'll be done before your realize it. Just assume that when they give you a shot that you're instantly done. B/c that's what it feels like. And then you go home and heal and feel better in a few days.
It's not a ton of fun, but it's not all too bad. You get lots of rest and watch lots of TV. So if you live a busy life, it's sort of nice to have a moment of calm.

I still have all of my wisdom teeth. In fact they are the most healthy teeth I have. Quite some of the others have been replaced by protheses that are held by the wisdom teeth.

Got back from surgery several hours ago. Started at 8:30, and according to my mom they were finished by 8:45. Mouth is a little sore, and I have huge holes in my memory, but other than that I'm fine.
