That's right! The home to all the infantile stuff we used to put up on the web way back in the day is being shut down today. That means no more Final Fantasy MIDIs all over the place, no Pokemon dedication sites, and no more of that ghastly GeoCities watermark following you as you scrolled down the page.

It's like the 90s finally realised it's dead.

I miss Geocities. I loved that place. So back then we hated everything on it, from the stupid blink tags to the stupid blink tags to the stupid blink tags to the stupid backgrounds to everything that was posted to them.
But it's a culture we're losing, the pre-millenium culture of the Internet. You know what, I think I'll go and use Netscape now.

Some of those websites are still useful! I hope archive.org is up for the task of keeping them online.

Nooooooo!
Sure much of it was blink tags, scrolling marques, fuchsia backgrounds, midi music, updates for the ads that would break your page and too much bloody comic sans. But Geocities was a little part of web history, way before every man and his dog had a web page, every man and his... bah.
There's still a lot of obscure though useful content on Geocties. And though most of it was crap (And yes, I contributed), it's sad to see it go.
Anglefire AND Tripod AFAIK still exist for now, but probably not for long.

It would seem that refined online capitalism, technological innovation and good taste are conspiring to ruin the Internet...

A screen full of blinking variable speed marquees telling everyone how great Roxette are with a badly off key midi (something of a tautology, I'll admit) of "The look". Oh and a low res bitmap as a background image that wastes 2-3MB of your bandwidth
