Time to look up "oniric"!

Psychonauts, an immensely original and funny 3D action-adventure platformer with surreal story and oniric environments, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 24 hours.

In this world created by Tim Schafer and his Double Fine team, there is a very special summer camp for kids with psychic special powers. Just as in any other well-organized summer camp, the children participate in various activities to earn merit badges. But instead of kayaking, building stick huts, lighting fire with two pieces of wood, they try to master levitation, hypnosis, and pyrokinesis. But just as every good summer camp story, this one also sees a sudden twist, when a mysterious evildoer abducts one psychic kid after another into the twisted realms of nightmares. It's up to Raz, a young but extraordinarily gifted cadet, to save the day, and it's up to you to enjoy every single bit of this oniric experience!

Psychonauts combines a well executed 3D platformer mechanics, surreall design, fantastic plot, sharp humor, and many innovative ideas into one game that you won't soon forget. This title received high praise from gamers, critics, and game designers alike, and remains a landmark that stands out from a somewhat crowded genre. If you value originality and excellence in design, at $3.99 Psychonauts is an offer you simply should not refuse.

You're up for an unforgettable oniric trip in Psychonauts, for only $3.99 on GOG.com. The promo lasts until Tuesday, May 27, at 9:59AM GMT.

ExiL0n: Well, if I'm not wrong you still begin from a subpart, if you passed it, even without finishing the level (I mean the ones that begin with a cutscene, or where you can use the teleport).
Yeah, could be, but in any case it's overly complicated what with level beginnings, subparts, checkpoints, and a game menu that suggests you can save your game anytime, but then the game saves neither exactly where you're at nor at the last checkpoint but only the 'subpart'. Apart from the lack of information leading to frustration, it can also be tedious to repeat the parts until you get to the point you actually had trouble with. It didn't bother me for most of my playthrough since it was rare that I felt like quitting halfway through a level, but it became an issue for me in the last one.

amok: Dust an Elysian Tail is a completely different game, though.... It is good, but there is really no easy way to compare them.
I guess it's not 3D but it has a similar feel. I would imagine that fans of Psychonauts would also enjoy Dust. That's a pretty lame comparison isn't it.....just humour me :)

Leroux: I think it's not that it gets too difficult for a novice...
avatar
inc09nito: i'd say the game is fairly easy except for some of the boss fights...
Ahhh....but there's "novice" and there's "pigdog novice"

Drilnoth: (Also, play this game if you haven't already)

amok: Is there actually anyone out there who do not yet own this game? What is wrong with you?

Barefoot_Monkey: This game is brilliant.
I agree with these three.

Nice promo, great game at a nice discount!

Leroux: One of the most aggravating things about Psychonauts IMO is the checkpoint system though. If you get stuck on a spot halfway through a level and you quit the game with the intention to take a break and try again another day (the sensible thing to do), you'll have to start the level from the beginning, no matter what checkpoint you were at when you 'saved' the game. I think that's counterproductive and doesn't make much sense (but to be fair, Psychonauts isn't the first and last game to apply such a checkpoint system, sadly).

I don't know if I'll buy it, I have it from the Humble Bundle. Still, I warmly suggest it to ANYONE who hasn't tried it, it is a really great game, with lots of details, polished story, humour and colors.
It might get frustrating if you are a completionist (like me XD), a couple of figments are really hard to get, else it's pretty straightforward, except for the already mentioned circus level and, at least for me, the brilliant, but hard, board game level.
Those figments can be really hard to get, especially in the sixties inspired level where you have to do a race. I think I spent upwards of four hours just to get all the figments in this race because it's impossible to get them in one go (there are multiple routes). Too bad your only reward is a 30 second video which doesn't really add anything to the game. In my opinion it's not worth putting the effort into getting all the figments. But it's a pretty cool game. It takes a while to get going but once you get some of the psychic powers to toy around with it becomes very interesting to play.
Bought. Has been on my wishlist for quite a while :-)
I recently finished this one (few weeks back) and was blown away by how well it had aged, and just how funny it was. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to play just an all round great game.
A few rough spots yeah, but definitely great game.
Loving the twitter description of the sale.

Anyway, I must admit that I was not a big fan of this game.

Psychonauts, one of the games that I have elsewhere... and now that I have here also.

I found it a lot of fun so I definitely recommend it.

The demo can be found here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/152193/150000/fileinfo/Psychonauts-Demo

Although as it only has the first level it doesn't even come close to showing how good to game becomes as you get more powers and as the story unfolds.
Actually Still don't have this game. In fact never heard too much about. Am I weird :)
Was decided to buy Robin Hood from current promo but what I read about Psychonauts little convinced me ^^

park_84: Same here, and I started playing this for the first time just two days ago. Maybe I've developed some kind of psychopower that let me control or predict the next gem promo...
I thought to buy this, and then find out I already own this
So this promo lasts until March next year? Good to know there's no rush. :-D
