Time to look up "oniric"!

Psychonauts, an immensely original and funny 3D action-adventure platformer with surreal story and oniric environments, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 24 hours.

In this world created by Tim Schafer and his Double Fine team, there is a very special summer camp for kids with psychic special powers. Just as in any other well-organized summer camp, the children participate in various activities to earn merit badges. But instead of kayaking, building stick huts, lighting fire with two pieces of wood, they try to master levitation, hypnosis, and pyrokinesis. But just as every good summer camp story, this one also sees a sudden twist, when a mysterious evildoer abducts one psychic kid after another into the twisted realms of nightmares. It's up to Raz, a young but extraordinarily gifted cadet, to save the day, and it's up to you to enjoy every single bit of this oniric experience!

Psychonauts combines a well executed 3D platformer mechanics, surreall design, fantastic plot, sharp humor, and many innovative ideas into one game that you won't soon forget. This title received high praise from gamers, critics, and game designers alike, and remains a landmark that stands out from a somewhat crowded genre. If you value originality and excellence in design, at $3.99 Psychonauts is an offer you simply should not refuse.

You're up for an unforgettable oniric trip in Psychonauts, for only $3.99 on GOG.com. The promo lasts until Tuesday, May 27, at 9:59AM GMT.

Well, it looks like this is a very long GOG gem promo :) (although I think it's just a mistake, I don't think it lasts longer than a day).

The next Tuesday, 5 March is 2019. That's one loooooooooooong sale.
My thought process:

Hmm… love this game.. have it elsewhere… $4 for a game I already own… trying not to add games to my backlog… this won't be added to my backlog… did get more value than what I paid for it through HiB… Didn't pay for Monkey Island when I was a kid… Will Buy!

amok: Is there actually anyone out there who do not yet own this game? What is wrong with you?
I have it but couldn't get on with it. It started ok with some unique humour but soon become tiresome and too difficult for a novice. If anyone wants a similar but superior game wait for Dust an Elysian Tail to be discounted which is beyond awesome.

jackster79: Having said that, from what I am reading both on the game card, the reviews there, and this forum, I gather this is better than the platformer Jak and Daxter: the Precursor Legacy for the PS2?
Define "better". ;)

It's definitely more original, story-oriented and funny. It can also be a bit more aggravating and frustrating in a few spots, but generally it's equally easy and totally worth playing despite all that. I like both, but to me Psychonauts it's a must-play and Jak and Daxter is (just?) a very enjoyable game.

Dust an Elysian Tail is a completely different game, though.... It is good, but there is really no easy way to compare them.
I do have the game, but I haven't actually played it. I started it once, but soon my keyboard's enter key broke and I couldn't continue. By the time I got fixed, there was something shiny in view and forgot about it.
This never caught my attention in the past (except for the name).. maybe I'll wishlist and think about it, seeing those reviews :O

I think it's not that it gets too difficult for a novice, it's just that is has some weird difficulty spikes. I had some serious trouble with 2-4 spots but once you beat them the game becomes a walk in the park again.

i'd say the game is fairly easy except for some of the boss fights and last level (the circus thing). the last level is way too difficult compared to rest of the game.

Hmmm......

Thank you for that comparison - definitely gives more insight.
I have this one as well (part of a rather large backlog...) I've heard good things about it, but haven't had time to dive in yet.

Curiously enough, it wasn't the boss fights I had most trouble with; IIRC it was two timed sequences, getting used to ball levitation thing and the circus - which wasn't all that hard in general either, but there were one or two spots that required better precision than I felt the game was offering.

One of the most aggravating things about Psychonauts IMO is the checkpoint system though. If you get stuck on a spot halfway through a level and you quit the game with the intention to take a break and try again another day (the sensible thing to do), you'll have to start the level from the beginning, no matter what checkpoint you were at when you 'saved' the game. I think that's counterproductive and doesn't make much sense. (To be fair, Psychonauts isn't the first and last game to apply such a checkpoint system, sadly - but maybe it's one of the few that at the same time trick you into thinking you can save your game at any time, without telling you about the drawbacks of quitting after a save.)

Well, if I'm not wrong you still begin from a subpart, if you passed it, even without finishing the level (I mean the ones that begin with a cutscene, or where you can use the teleport).

I don't know if I'll buy it, I have it from the Humble Bundle. Still, I warmly suggest it to ANYONE who hasn't tried it, it is a really great game, with lots of details, polished story, humour and colors.
It might get frustrating if you are a completionist (like me XD), a couple of figments are really hard to get, else it's pretty straightforward, except for the already mentioned circus level and, at least for me, the brilliant, but hard, board game level.
