GameRager: I dislike what happened but isn't that a slippery slope? What if the gov't decide to make everything you say to someone carry legal weight? Even casual asides or stuff said in the heat of the moment and on only one occasion? What if a stranger walks past and says something nasty and you say "You should die/kill yourself" and they do and the law decides to arrest you? What then?

godspeeed: It is possible to file a complain to police if someone harass or stalks you. Not like the person will get jail time but at least that if the person speaks to you or gets anywhere near they get a criminal record and deal with the consequences. When bullies try to cross boarders after such an event and are bing asked if they have a criminal record they will have to tell customs that they do have a criminal record but not because they are dangerous, just because they are very stupid and an annoyance to society. I don't really believe that jail can fix anyone... So I am not saying we should be sent in jail for being a prick at school but there are ways to fight back.
The laws people are proposing and trying to pass in several states would make bullying online a crime possibly with a jail sentence. I really don't think this is the right way to go about things.

Edit: By bullying I mean anything that could be interpeted that way by someone who felt they were being bullied......now just toss in someone who doesn't like you to start filing complaints and you get arrested and/or fined + a possible criminal record.

I fully agree. Bullying is a social problem and should only be enforced by laws if society has failed. Some awareness raising for teachers or parents sure wouldn't hurt, but punitive measures nearly never have any preventive results.

What I will never understand is why, at least in Czech Republic, you can't have camera systems installed in schools. For protecting children "privacy" - hah, my ass, first thing to realize about children is that they are our future. Second thing is that children are mostly selfish irresponsible bastards. As such, any claim for privacy is outweighted by advantages of monitoring system.

There is no other way to stop bullying in schools, none. There's no way to prove it. And weaker will suffer.

Cameras might help but I don't think they should be everywhere. Maybe just in halls and classrooms...not toilet/etc.

Thats a tricky question and I lack the education adn experience to give any good suggestion. I hate the word Jail...

I would just put the computers of anyone suspected of serial bullying under investigation. Then you find porn, illegal softwares, downloaded music from limewire and then they would get busted for other shit

That would go against personal privacy and in the US alone would be overturned for being unconstitutional from day one. Besides they could log any bullying committed online via isp logs and such. They wouldn't even need to access your PC, thus rendering any searching of suspected people's pc illegal/unneeded/etc.

It all boils down to the fact that the net shouldn't be a kid's second set of parents, and people shouldn't be held accountable for every dumb thing they say because parents can't be parents and kids don't know any better about how to handle shit.

I've fought bullies for most of my school days, still do. Not in the "Law" or "Rule" Sense but in the actual, teach them what their doing sense. I give the girl my greatest regrets....but I still say suicide is a dumb choice.

well from the point of view of someone who is surrounded by dumb people, and putting the expected maturity level of a 16 years old, I think that she is far more intelligent than the people who drove her to this decision....

So, establishing a "Police State" in schools is the logical solution to prevent bullying. Am I the only one who has a problem with that?

I think that Landerill means dumb as in not her being dumb but the choice out of all the other options she could've picked from. Killing one's self is never the smart choice.

You don't even need to turn them on, just put them there, anyway I don't think there is an easy solution out of this.

There's already one everywhere else. Fact is privacy is an illusion. :\

Besides some schools do it already(my bro's special needs school does it.), and it helps sometimes. If done right it would work out good, I think. Like just use taped footage for verifying what students report(bullying/etc) and that's it, and delete all tapes after a week or so.
