Yeah, it's interesting. 2 is definitely better than 1. A big part is better level design.

But what's really amazing is the pacing of 2. It puts you in a sort of zen, constantly making decisions, but just critical path decisions, and while it's perhaps somewhat difficult to always make the optimal choice, it's almost impossible to make a bad choice.
I'll also add this: when having a panic attack it can be very very tempting to turn to things like videogames instead of sleeping. Its really important to do whatever you can to keep a sleep rhythm... even if that means being in bed awake for hours.

I've seen it happen, going from anxiety to none at all over a concern that was causing the problem. Stress/Anxiety tend to do more damage than any ailments or situations. The last thing you want to do is be hospitalized over a stupid bill, for example. :P

Mental illness doesn't just magically go away because you want it to. If I could have solved my anxiety problems by making little changes to my surroundings, I would have done so 16 years ago to avoid living in pure hell this entire time. Painting my doorknob and putting pictures on my door (I really did this - a lot,) did not help me overcome my anxiety of opening my bedroom door from the ages of 17-21. Neither did replacing the entire door. Writing funny and inspirational quotes on the back of my hand when I had (and still have) a fear of washing my hands didn't help.

The problem is not what a phone or doorbell sounds like. The problem is that these sounds mean you have to interact with another human, and that you are potentially in for horrible news, or a murderer at your door. Changing the sounds do not change your fears.

I'd love to let things stop overwhelming me and disturbing me. I'd love to let little things affect me less. I'd love to love life. Unfortunately, people with mental illness can't do that very well. For people with mental illness, life is not what they make of it. Life is dealt to them before they are born, and they have to live with it possibly forever.

I realize this may sound ridiculous, but it is true to many people with mental illness. Someone telling someone with mental illness to "learn to love life," or "only you have the power to change," or "you need to learn how to not be depressed and anxious" is basically as ridiculous as saying, "You need to teach yourself to not have cancer."
Just like any other disease, you can't will it away. Changing the little things around you might help a little, but that is just putting lipstick on a pig. And that lipstick will wash away very quickly and easily.

You make it sound like preventing anxiety attacks is so easy. It requires an insane amount of work and money just to attempt preventing anxiety. I have seen a dozen doctors, been in therapy for years, been on ~25 medications, and even had electro-convulsive therapy to try and get help from my problems. These problems have destroyed my life, and many of the attempted cures have made things significantly worse.
This is literally a second to second battle for survival, so please try not to make it sound so simple.
Yes it is I should know I suffer anxiety and panic attacks especially before I go out I also have OCD I HAVE TO WASH, WASH, WASH, WASH, WASH Everything it was so bad once I had my own Fork, Knife, Spoon, Bowl, Plate, Cup, Saucer and refused to eat anything that was already open! I also avoided my filthy disgusting sister she used to taunt me that she backwashed in the milk and then she shoved one of her used sanitary napkins with encrusted filth (faeces urine and dried blood) on it RIGHT IN MY FACE that's what started my own cutlery and bowl, cup, plate, saucer thing I was repulsed!

I feel sick just remembering it! :S

Wow, can't believe I missed this one.

It's not the sound, it's what's it entails.
It's not the ringtone, it's the conversation it announces.
It's not the alarm, it's what comes after.
It's not the door, it's what's on the other side.
it's not the mailbox, it's the content of the mail.

Your ideas and later platitudes don't address the underlying issue of the way we over think and over analyse. It's none of those mundane things, it's the monster in our heads that we have to live with, it's not as simple as "love yourself and love life", whatever the hell kind of new age bollocks that means.

You may laughingly joke about a "stupid bill", but if that's a trigger, there's a point for those of us with this anxiety where that becomes the most important thing in our lives. It's like a lion staring us in the face just waiting for that single movement to pounce and tear us to shreds. It feels like it can be the difference between life and death and it very easily paralyses us with that fear.

It may not make sense, but it doesn't need to, it's there (or to be more precise, it's what might be there).

Why are you getting so pissed off suddenly? He didnt say anything offensive, you could actually try to use some of his advices, which might not work out for you at all, but if you wanna stop trying, then why bother living. Life is about trying to deal with issues - everyone has some, even if they dont admit it.

I am not an exception.

But instead of going in a comfy (in a sense of stability) spiral of self pity (and justify it, saying 'I was born this way, there is nothing I can do about it'), its really important to try to overcome it.

TBH I often find it hard to do it myself, and give in to a really low mood or panic, but I know I have to try.

You say mental illness. And what exactly is a mental illness? Well, it is a state of mind. So try to use your mind to fight it.

And as with any problem in life, when left alone, it grows bigger and bigger.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I don't know sht, but if it makes you feel any better tell me this yourselves.

I replay peaceful feeling classics to ease stress. I also recommend Chronotrigger, if you have it or can find it. Some of the older rpgs are upbeat, peaceful. This is why I replay Mario & Luigi rpgs, Lufia 1 & 2, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the even Stars (available on the Wii store), Zelda: Link to the Past (also Wii store), Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zelda: Windwaker, Spyro 2 & 3, Paper Mario 1 & Paper Mario 2: Thousand Year Door, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, old Final Fantasy RPGs, and the game I am replaying right now: Super Mario Sunshine, - all have very pleasing soundtracks and bright visuals

If you like adventure games then peaceful games in pleasant places could be helpful. Myst/Riven, A Quiet Weekend in Capri & AnaCapri, Syberia, Amerzone, Nancy Drew games, Sam & Max, Zork Grand Inquisitor (its too silly to be scary), Tales of Monkey Island (& earlier Monkey Island games) ...

If the mentioned shooters aren't your cup of tea, and adventures give you too much time to think about worrisome things, then consider casual games. These can also be relaxing - as well as a bit 'mindless.' The steady clicking can help a lot with the diversion aspect.. The more cheerful Hidden Object & Match 3's are usually pleasant enough. Crystal Path, Puzzle Inlay, and most word games are very peaceful

Certain games can help cope with those issues, and I personally can't suggest any because of differing tastes. I will say don't EVER play any of the Gradius games while in the state of anxiety... trust me when I say that it will end horribly.

Medical anxiety/depression is different, which OP did not indicate he had when I first read it. In cases of chemical imbalances, yes it's completely irrelevant. In the case of stress and life for the normal folks it works just fine.

Some of my triggers are the phone or doorbell ringing, knocking at the door, receiving government mail and to a lesser degree bills.

Weirdly enough, violent horror movies help but not horror video games. Reading also help but I'm searching for a more interactive way to treat the symptoms. Games where one can easily get stuck are also not a good idea.

It's nice to see that I'm not alone here with that mental illness, maybe this thread will show others that they are not alone as well.

And to whom it may concern: There are people who's mental condition is purely psychological, I've tried seeing a psychologist and it made me conclude that my condition is physical, my brain has a malfunction. I also have Asperger syndrome and although it is light I assure you that it is not something I can think away.

JudasIscariot: First person shooters seem like they might help but I am no expert on this topic.

If not those, then perhaps a game like Flow or something similar can ease the nerves.
I'm also no expert but I do live with a lovely lady who suffers from similar difficulties.
She tends to favor somewhat fast paced story driven games often with an FPS UI so JudasIscariot may be on to something there.
