Anyone else here with an anxiety disorder?

Do you know of games that helps?

Some of my triggers are the phone or doorbell ringing, knocking at the door, receiving government mail and to a lesser degree bills.

Weirdly enough, violent horror movies help but not horror video games. Reading also help but I'm searching for a more interactive way to treat the symptoms. Games where one can easily get stuck are also not a good idea.

If you haven't already, wouldn't it be prudent to talk to someone who specializes in this field? I'm sure he wouldn't look at you funny of you asked him if there is any form of interactive media that could help in the long term.

Carmageddon 2 on easy would be my suggestion. While I by no means lead an anxious life I too can get pretty antsy and edgy and pissy and it all comes from pressure of some sort or another, so I recommend anything that relieves tension without in turn causing it via difficulty. Sure, the Doom/Quake games are fun for letting off steam by blasting, but constantly being under the gun (pardon the pun) can cause more stress that it takes away. THUS go Carma 2 on easy. It's virtually impossible to run out of time or get killed yet you get to cause wanton destruction, so it's the best of both worlds.

Try definitely the Longest journey games, especially the first one throws you in a phantasy world, also Torment is a pretty nice game with a lot of dialogues. You could also try some Sherlock holmes adventure games (but some of them do show the victim's body), Syberia 1 and 2 (nice adventure game), also Dragon Age origins ult edition, ...

If you have psp,ps2 or psx try the final fantasy games or Chrono trigger.

I know some people who have social anxiety (find it really hard to interact with other people or are not comfortable in crowded areas) so I know to an extend how you fell)

For me, I find pinball games (especially Pinball Arcade), flyers like Race the Sun, and also turn-based tactical games like XCOM: EU to be a lot of help. Also Spelunky, which helps keep me entirely focused, and can get stressful, but never in a way that exacerbates my symptoms. Though not game related, you could also try listening to pink or brown noise, which I find to be incredibly calming.

I have anxiety, and sometimes it can get really bad. Triggers for me are public speaking, getting phonecalls from out of state numbers, and like you, getting mail from the government or the university I went to. I also get really, really anxious if I'm the main focus of something, like for example a job interview I had recently where I had to give a surprise presentation to a panel of people who were scoring me on my interview. I now dread getting a letter in the mail telling me how poorly I surely did.

Anyway, when my anxiety gets particularly bad I typically mope all day, but sometimes playing things like Hotline Miami or Binding of Isaac. Games that don't take much time to get into, and don't take much intense brain power to play. Doom fits into this as well.

I have some severe anxiety issues myself (Generalized anxiety disorder,) so I have experimented plenty on this subject.

This is concerning full-on anxiety and panic attacks, not just "feeling kinda anxious" or "a bit tense."
I find that a fast paced FPS or other action game helps me the most during a full-on attack. Notable ones are Left 4 Dead and Payday: The Heist. Tribes: Ascend has also worked pretty well.
If you are not into FPS games, I've found Supreme Commander 2 to work, as well as C&C 3. Torchlight/2 isn't too bad either.
Some fast paced puzzles have helped on occasion, like Tetris, but I've had mixed results with that.

Anything slow, like an adventure game, or heavy-thinking puzzles just seem to make things worse for me.

Basically, games that require you to constantly think and react extremely quickly, with a lot of distractions all around. I know this may seem like it would make things worse, but this is what works best for me. Not all people are the same.

Whenever I need to relax, I go for sandbox/survival games. You make your own goals (if any), there's no getting stuck, and they often let you mod the game into whatever experience you find most relaxing.

For me it was always S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl - the game does build some anxiety, yet the atmosphere can also be peaceful and I found it to be good for "grounding" my brain when it rebels: that is, my brain would shortly accept it as the cause of the anxiety, instead of creating more, allowing me to cope with it.
I think the basic survival idea behind it also helped to some degree - but as a sideline.
Hopefully that will make some sense - I find the same with horror flicks, so it may work for you.

There are a few others, but that was the one that really helped sort me out the most over the years (even rebought it at christmas).

Curious how games where you blow people up in dark corridors seem to help with this situation?

Anyway, i guess it's the ease of the controls, the lack of serious thought and more of a twitch finger sort of game that helps relax in these situations. I say, stay out of checkpoint based games, since the frustration of playing over and over parts you have already played in order to get to the point you'll get killed again can be pretty irritating.

Open ended games seem like a good idea, specially if you don't stick to the main quest. Side quests are quick reward events that you can do without much pressure and open games let you roam around freely playing the game however you like it.

I find the opposite quite often (specifically the games you mentioned aside from SC2 which I havent played and Torchlight which did work) make me worse, whereas an FPS that requires a little more thinking and less reaction (ie S.AT.A.L.K.E.R. as I mentioned above), does work. Like you said not everyones the same and there are many different triggers and propellants. My mate used to find the same kinda things worked for him as you, but he's slowly turning towards my own preferences when in a state. His anxiety is very similar to mine (both in its cause and effects / manifestations) so it's good that he has that, and I've also found myself enjoying a few games with him on stuff I'd normally not touch.

Maybe thats the medicine for some of us eh?!

I do have a lot of anxiety, and some depression (Yesturday was 3 years since my mother died.), I never usually game or do about anything during this time of the year.

Agreed, and thank you for your thoughts. Though sometimes easier said than done as she was like a best friend to me.
